A Growing Divide -Families Dread the Pending Fortification of Border at a Park (Evil Duncan Hunter)
Wash Post ^ | 10/18/08 | Ashley Surdin

BORDER FIELD STATE PARK, Calif. -- Each face would be overlaid with the rusted chain links of the U.S.-Mexico border fence, but Jorge Ibarra snapped the photos anyway.

There was his cousin, holding up her baby boy for the family to see. There, his aunt, wiping her eyes under the shade of her parasol. And there, his grandmother, her face filled with joy as she touched her daughter's fingertips through the fence with her own.

Ibarra, 17, of National City, Calif., shot the family photos on a recent Sunday afternoon here, where the 2,000-mile line separating the United States and Mexico sinks into the Pacific Ocean. For years, Mexican American families have flocked to this beachside park to see, touch, hear and feed loved ones through the modest openings of the fence.

But the days of such reunions are numbered. Starting this month, construction of a more fortified barrier along the southern edge of the park and the three miles to the east will begin as part of the federal government's crackdown on drug and document smuggling, illegal crossings and violence in the surrounding area.

Get a passport and visit each other. That’s what everyone else does who don’t live in the same country.

They are five freaking miles from a legal border crossing. Go over there, check in and actually visit your friends and family instead of whining about a fence upgrade.

*Fighting back tears.* Nice try Ashley, but your being young and stupid is no excuse for your pitiful attempt to make a comparison of the border fence with the Berlin Wall. Free history lesson for you Ash. The Berlin Wall was meant to KEEP PEOPLE IN. We don't have doors with locks on our homes TO KEEP PEOPLE IN. We have doors with locks to KEEP PEOPLE OUT and make it tough for them to come in and steal everything we have.

The meeting place would seem to only be of use to illegal immigrants on the U.S. side.

American citizens or legal permanent residents can easily travel to Mexico to visit their loved ones.

I really hate when the media tries to play on people’s sympathies as with the story of the man who goes to the fence to visit his wife and 5 year old daughter.

He broke our laws, invaded our country and ABANDONED his family. If he misses them so much, I will buy him a bus ticket home.

Ignacio Ramos’ resentencing will be Nov. 13 in El Paso, and Jose Compean’s will be Nov. 12

Thanks for the heads up.

Unfortunately, since the "assault" charge (with a gun) was not dropped, I don't see them getting less than 10 years given mandatory sentencing.

What do you want to bet that Ibarra’s mother entered the US illegally and that Jorge is an anchor baby?

If they want to unite the family, try returning to Mexico.

It was a dark and stormy night along the border of fascist, Bushitler Amerika as “Manual Labor” stood under the crypto-conservative sign `Work Makes One Free’, but written in the dark language of Huntmordor which shall not be uttered in this straight elven news story:
“There was his cousin, holding up her baby boy for the family to see. There, his aunt, wiping her eyes under the shade of her parasol. And there, his grandmother, her face filled with joy as she touched her daughter’s fingertips through the fence with her own.”
With trembling fingers this brave old vieja ripped the simple peasant bodice from her sagging dugs ...
and so forth and so on.

That park is a sewer where the waste from TJ flows to the sea. It’s a disgusting swamp, not a park like they try to make it out in this article.

With the rampant crime and corruption in Mexico, we need the fence finished. Good fences make good neighbors. We don't want the Mexicans to bring their problems with them here.
