(Pro-Abort Politican Op-Ed): What Are We Doing? by Deal W. Hudson

What Are We Doing?

by Deal W. Hudson

10/17/08

Last night, the Archdiocese of New York held its famous Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, with both Senators John McCain and Barack Obama as guests. I watched the coverage today -- the story is all over the news, along with images of Obama and Edward Cardinal Egan sharing a laugh.

Something about that bothered me.

No, it's not what you think. I'm not upset that a Democrat and the cardinal were enjoying a conversation. This is not a partisan issue, and I would have had the same negative reaction if it were Rudy Giuliani or Susan Collins instead of Obama.

The truth is, the first thought that came to my mind was a simple one: What are we doing here? If abortion really is what we say it is -- the gruesome murder of unborn children -- do our actions reflect that belief? And if those who support abortion are guilty of facilitating such a horror, how should we respond to them?

If this were 1855, would we be inviting pro-slavery politicians to take a break from a hard fought race, and share a laugh and a meal? As one who finds courage and inspiration in the example of the Radical Republican abolitionists, I just can't imagine it.

But isn't that what we're doing today? I know that wasn't Cardinal Egan's intention -- of course not. (I also recognize that I'm raising these concerns after the fact.) However, in today's media driven society, images matter. The sight of Obama and the cardinal palling around sends the message -- whether intentional or not -- that the pro-choice senator is fine in Egan's eyes.

I thought the same thing

The Cardinal yukking it up with a Senator who advocates infanticide was troubling. Would he have been schmoozing with Hitler if it was 1939?

I had the same reaction when I saw the two of them sharing a laugh together. Obama’s pro-abortion policies so repulse me, that I could not share anything with him. I could not sit beside him nor break bread with him. If I spoke to him at all it would be in condemnation. He calls himself a Christian, but no real Christian could believe in abortion as he does.

Here is what I think. Pro lifers brought a knife to a gunfight most of these years. The last couple of years, the vitriol of the pro baby killers has risen substantially. We have now brought a gun to a missle fight. I am sorry, but this thing has come to a head now, and I believe it is the Lord our God who has done it. Heres why. During my lifetime, I have never seen 2 sides having a candidate who so clearly illustrate the scripture “I put before you both death, and life; CHOOSE LIFE”. I believe this is Gods ‘calling to account” moment in History for our country. By this election He will either remove his Providence from a nation who clearly does not want him here, or he will pour out his spirit for those who have correctly chosen life. We have fought, but not with all our being these thirty years. We have not informed the public to the horrors because people found it too objectionable. Our youth has been “spared” the grizzly details by well meaning parents and clergy, with only the very few “extremists” showing and telling the truth. We ALL must become right to life extremists! If Humane Vitae taught us nothing, it showed us prophetically the decline of morality ahead of time. We did not stop it, we called it “progress”. 50% of catholics divorce, think some form of abortion is ok, and will VOTE for obama! Wake UP america, the next defensless “infirmity” may be your OWN- eldery, mentally or physically challenged ect... We already have an african american genocide, and a rush to eliminate the poor among us (abortion clinics 2 main targets on a grand scale since already 90% of medically deficient babies are already aborted!) Wake up and fight! This message IS objectionable, so BE objectionable! You can try coating Sh*t with sugar, but IT DOESN”T WORK! We need to stop letting them lick the SUGAR and EAT THE SH*T! We will all meet our maker one day, how will YOU answer the question- What did you do with the free will I gave you? Did you fight for the least among you or did you worry about the economy, gas prices, ect... FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT with all you HAVE!

Ditto here...and I was wondering why I hadn’t heard anyone else bringing it up.

Exactly. There is nothing more evil in the world today, than the US government policy of abortion on demand. 50 million dead since Roe v Wade became law. And the outrage continues.

The day after this event, I was listening to the radio and Fox News and one or the other mentioned that neither Gore nor Kerry had been invited to this event. They may have also mentioned that no dem president or nominee had been invited before (sorry, I was busy and was hearing things in snips). What made this year different?

It looked wrong. He has a point.

I felt that Cardinal Egan was uncomfortable at times ... but Deal Hudson does echo my general feeling.

It is on the same order of placing charitable works against the evil of abortion and finding the killing fields less serious.

Maybe the Hierarchy of the church fears that Obambi might actually get elected.

Don't worry about Cardinal Egan. He came out strong against Pelosi, Biden and other CINOS -- so he is likewise against Obamanation.

Updated: American Bishops who have spoken against Pelosi

Here is the complete list of American bishops who have responded to Nancy Pelosi's comments so far:
  1. Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver was the first American bishop to respond
  2. ... Bishop James Conley, his auxiliary, joined him
  3. Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington DC responded twice, first in a press release and second in a statement to The Hill. He has also appeared on Fox News, I am told.
  4. Cardinal Justin Regali of Philadelphia, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued this statement through the USCCB website...
  5. ... Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, joined him
  6. Cardinal Edward Egan of New York publised a strongly worded statement of his own
  7. Bishop Samuel Aquila of Fargo issued a letter correcting Pelosi's claims
  8. Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh and...
  9. ... Bishop Michael Sheridan of Colorado Springs have chimed-in
  10. Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio, CNA reports has added his voice ...
  11. ... Bishop Oscar Cantu, his auxiliary bishop, has joined him
  12. Bishop William Murphy of Rockville has published an extensive letter
  13. Bishop Edward Slattery of Tulsa has a detailed response
  14. Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas has joined the USCCB's efforts
  15. Bishop Gregory Aymond of Austin is on-board
  16. Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston mentions the USCCB on his blog
  17. Bishop Thomas Wenski of Orlando has written at length
  18. Archbishop John Nienstedt of Saint Paul/Minneapolis challenges Pelosi's statement
  19. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, President of the US Bishops, has weighed-in
  20. Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, OR publishes in the Catholic Sentinel
  21. Bishop Jerome Listecki of La Crosse, WI responds in a word document
  22. Bishop Richard Lennon of Cleveland, OH will comment in his September 5th column (PDF)
  23. Bishop Ralph Nickless of Sioux City, IA has one of the very best responses I've read
  24. Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco has invited Pelosi to a "conversation"
  25. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn: "Judging the Candidates"

{Last updated on September 10th.}

Notes:

  • Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
  • Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
  • #26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th

Why was Katie Couric honored there with a seat among dignitaries?
Do they buy those seating positions?

It's a little unsavory to see liberals, non-Catholics, and pro-abortion people
honored at any Catholic event.

The good news is that many hard core leftists don’t have children and many Christians have plenty of children. In the end it is a battle of demographics and it will get better for America as the good outnumber the bad.

Agnosticism, greed, ego, selfishness, abortion and environmentalism have contributed to the declining birthrate of a mostly Democratic population. They are killing themselves and do not realize it. Soon their voices will grown distant.
