Are Career DOJ Bureaucrats Targeting GOP Activists? Posted by: Erick Erickson

Friday, October 17, 2008 at 07:18AM CDT

The implications of this article are downright frightening.

former Republican congressional candidate Tan Nguyen [ ] ran for office in the 47th Congressional District of California in 2006 against incumbent Loretta Sanchez. On October 1, the Civil Rights Division announced the indictment of Nguyen for obstruction of justice for supposedly making “misleading statements to investigators” regarding a letter that was sent to Latino voters during the election. This investigation and indictment represents a particularly egregious example of the government persecuting someone for engaging in perfectly legal behavior. Essentially, Nguyen is being prosecuted for having informed voters of the truth, although it is a truth disliked by the career lawyers in the Civil Rights Division.

The letter (in Spanish) that is the basis of the indictment was apparently sent out to Latino voters by the California Coalition for Immigration Reform (CCIR). It told voters that if they were a citizen of the United States, they should “participate in the democratic process of voting.” However, the letter warned voters that if they were residing in this country illegally, “voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time” and for which they could be deported. The letter made clear that voting in any election “if you are not a citizen of the United States” would be “useless and dangerous.”

According to the article, nothing in the letter was false. Nonetheless, the Department of Justice wants to go after people allegedly involved in voter "suppression" efforts, even without statutory authority to do so.

What makes this troubling is that the Department of Justice officials who made the call to do this are career guys, not Presidential appointees. More troubling, these same lawyers are Obama supporters. We need to keep our eyes on this situation.

Is this a window into what we would be looking at if Obama were elected. This is chilling.

I don't think there is any doubt that Sanchez was elected originally by knowingly and willfully encouraging illegals to vote for her.

She is the one who should have been investigated but we all know there is a double standard in many government agencies.

And even if Obama were not elected.

How can this stuff be stopped? Only with a strong GOP I suppose but how do we get away from the Battered Republican syndrome? They are all cowering before the media.

If you follow the logic, then sending out a mailer informing English speaking voters (sure to include a large number of whites) of basic election rules would violate some interpretation of Civil Rights law since the effect would be to negate the influence of racial minority voters overall.

Man, McCain has to win.

yes it is - and it is chilling.

Much more like this to come should Obambi’s coup succeed.

The Obammunists will be going after anyone who dares to speak the truth about “the One” or his friends.....as they let the cat out of the bag in the Missouri officials’ intimidation tactics.

How can it be stopped? Elect McCain/Palin. DOJ and State Department are filled with political appointees turned career and time to weed them out. You may not be able to fire them but send them to the basement and investigate them for political activities while on the job.

The last 8 years are starting to be a nightmare except after 9/11 with the President. When Ashcroft was AG, people were quitting but after that they have had been getting a free ride.

Want to make changes at DOJ, McCain needs to appoint Rudy as Attorney General. Rudy took on the mob and NYC and would be a perfect fit to clean out the RATs nest that is the DOJ.

You made a mistake in the word order in your sentence. I corrected it for you. No thanks are necessary.

More than any other, my biggest disappointment with GWB is: that he did nothing to discourage the internal enemies of our country.

The new president cannot "fire the lot" when he takes office.

That is the insidiousness of the Washington bureaucracy.

Sounds like they did a Libby on him - when no crime has been committed, question the suspect until he makes a mistake and then indict him for "obstruction of justice." Nguyen should have watched this video.

He could have fired the political appointees that Clinton turned Civil Service because they were still in their 90-day probation and int he first year, they can be let go.

Bush didn’t even ask the US Attorneys for their resignations like Clinton — he should have.

You can get rid of them if you want by assigning them jobs that take them completely out of the loop. At the rank these people are, they cannot file a union grievance against mangement. Send them to the basement of DOJ and once out of the loop, most will quit because they were placed there to spy for the Dems IMHO. John Ashcroft got several to quit to spending more time with their family so with the right AG, you can clean house.

Yes he can. For example just look to the firings of the white house travel office by the clintons. There was a big uproar over it but they just ignored it and the firings stood.

Truth squads, lawsuits against any who disagree, smears against those who question Obama, students marching in army uniform like Hitler’s youth and the list goes on. America is under attack from Marxists within and “useful idiots” of the MSM. All this before,God save us, he is even elected. I don’t think we can even imagine what more could happen!

Well they can threaten them, but they can’t stop San Diegoans from standing at a legal distance from the polls with signs stating “Illegals dont Vote” in Spanish of course.

They can’t stop the cameras or the ‘ICE’ agents from strolling the entrances.

That is an outstanding idea — go for it in San Diego and elsewhere which is the only way to keep the illegals from voting.

The main reason Bush didn't fire them all was they were basically on the same level of idealism. The only difference is they hated Republicans no matter what their philosophy.

Remember it was under a Bush that Ruby Ridge took place, and the BATF has run wild under this Bush.

Bush didn't fire them because he agreed with them. Unfortunately they didn't return the favor.
