LINCOLN, Neb. - Safety concerns have forced University of Nebraska-Lincoln officials to cancel plans for William Ayers to speak on campus.

Ayers, who founded a group in the late 1960s that claimed responsibility for bombing several government buildings, was to speak Nov. 15.

But officials said Friday the university's threat assessment group received e-mails and phone calls over the last day or two that identified safety issues.

When asked about details of the concerns, including if they contained threats against Ayers, University spokeswoman Meg Lauerman declined to comment further.

"We don't discuss the specifics of any threat assessment on campus," she said.

Ayers, a University of Illinois at Chicago education professor, was invited by UNL's College of Education and Human Sciences because of his expertise in research related to small schools and urban education.

He also is vice president-elect of curriculum studies at the American Educational Research Association.

Ayers founded the Weather Underground in the late 1960s, which claimed responsibility for nonfatal bombings of the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.

Friday's announcement comes after Gov. Dave Heineman and others asked the university to rescind its invitation.

"Bill Ayers is a well-known radical who should never have been invited," Heineman said earlier Friday. "The people of Nebraska are outraged.

"This has gone beyond the University of Nebraska. It's gotten to citizens all across this state, and they're not happy because this is a public university."

Heineman called on NU President J.B. Milliken and Chuck Hassebrook, chairman of the NU Board of Regents, to tell Ayers to stay home.

Good job...keep him holed up in his office in Chicago. No one other than Obama has any use for him.

My guess, the threats and concerns are coming from the Obama camp.

I noticed that they omitted the bombings where people were killed. Also the part and reason why his henchmen and hench women were killed.

Ayers is lucky to be out on the streets after his actions years ago. So does he keep a low profile. No he goes shooting his mouth off across the nation on our college campuses. Let a Conservative come within a mile of one of them and they are heckled and threatened.

My heart bleeds for Ayers. NOT

I am sure they did some threat assessment after major contributors threaten to withhold their contributions.

I bet Nebraska alum were the ones saying if they give this guy the podium, no more money from them.

I hope we do see Ayers speaking some time before the election.

"We don't discuss the specifics of any threat assessment on campus," she said.

I bet this is BS. When a known, credible threat is made, I am sure that the word gets out quickly. The decision was reached because the Nebraska Bozos had to back out of invitation, probably because of pissed off alumni (I hope).

“Ayers founded the Weather Underground in the late 1960s, which claimed responsibility for nonfatal bombings of the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.”

Selective editing at its finest. Wasn’t there some fatal bombings elsewhere? Oh never mind, they were little people.

Anyone could have seen this coming and one of the local radio hosts on KFAB predicted this would happen. Just a cover for the University to back out after the intense pressure and number of calls they got-there were no threats. Meg Lauerman was one of my professors at UNL and her husband owns Bailey Lauerman ad agency in Lincoln. She’s a PR master.

Sure, let the MSM blame interference by a Republican governor in the university’s internal affairs.

Truth is, Obama’s team ordered the university’s administrators—loyal Democrats to a man, most likely—not to embarrass him with an Ayers appearance.

At the end, the guest start to suggest Ayers won’t admit to being in San Francisco due to testimony in the case that could implicate Bernadine Dohrn(Ayer’s Wife) [in one of the officer’s deaths?]? Gretta didn’t have enough sense to let him finish his point

Out on the streets? Ayers needs to be deported along with the rest of the anti-American thugs ruining this country. It is about time we start putting pressure on our conservative leaders to protect this country against those determined to destroy it from within.
