StarTribune ^ | 10/16/08 | John Seewer/AP

Joe the Plumber said Thursday he doesn't have a license and doesn't need one. Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, the nickname Republican John McCain bestowed on him during Wednesday's presidential debate, said he works for a small plumbing company that does residential work. Because he works for someone else, he doesn't need a license, he said.

This my understanding for California where I hold a Plumbing Contractors License.

“California does not have a state Journeyman and or Master License. You are either a plumbing contractor, or not. A licensed plumbing contractor can hire anyone he wants to and put them to work.”

“These are not high knowledge requirement jobs.”

Actually it is high knowledge in that you have to know various health, fire, and safety codes.

And a lot of states require continuing education for licensed trades.

The witch hunt begins again... First it was Sarah and her family, now it’s Joe who happens to be speaking up for us. The mob is again being led by the DEMS and the MSM. How ironic that they choose to attack McCain/Palin about any so called “nastiness”, yet they don’t see their own actions as such. They don’t get it. It does not matter if Joe is a licensed
plumber or not, or whether he makes $30000 or $250000, whether he owns or works for a business, whether he is Republican, Dem, or Independent. What matters is the answer that he was given by Obama to his question about taxes...and that was “we have to spread the wealth around”. That is not a reason for anyone to be taxed more than is fair. And yes, his idea is a punishment for anyone that chooses to work hard and get ahead. That will no longer be allowed! Any time Obama’s true agenda is found out, the attack dogs are let loose. We are not allowed to know the truth. Shame on them!!! Stand tall Joe... you are speaking for America.

He doesn’t need a license to do residential work.

Also, licensure laws are anti-competitive.

Anyways, attacking the man is stupid. Barack is on tape saying that the government should ‘spread the wealth of plumbers around.’ Whatever skeletons Joe the Plumber has are irrelevant. If anything, it’ll just expose the left for who they really are, a group of hateful morons peddling old ideas and pushing a childish fascism on the masses. Think about this...it would give Gov. Palin an opportunity to castigate the media, the Dems, and the left for their willingness to engage in the politics of personal destruction. If this plays out like I think it will, the left is really going to hate Joe the Plumber.

The best thing for the Obama campaign to do right now is to change the subject. But they won’t. They are so afraid of being ‘Swift Boated’ that they will needlessly keep Joe the Plumber in the news cycle by attacking the man.

You know what really surprises me about all of this discussion about Joe the Plumber?

No Plumber’s crack jokes...I think it’s missing from the convo.

“Why the idea of licensed plumber?

Who is the body that would issue such a license?

Ditto for electrician, carpenter, etc.

These are not high knowledge requirement jobs. There’s a certain skill, but a deep risk either.”

Wow, tell that to the many people that die and fall ill every year from bad plumbing, electrical, and heating work.

Joe the Plumber is competing every day against illegal aliens of whom nobody ever asks for licenses.

Or legal entry papers.

Too bad John McCain is for amnesty and open borders. He could have used the issue to great effect. He can’t be much for Joe the Plumber when he wants to bring in 20 million illegals to take Joe’s job.

I never even heard of a plumber’s license - unless it’s a union card saying he is licensed to do the same work as JTP in twice the time for 3x the cost.

Plumbers need to be licensed in nearly every state. Don’t need to be union, just licensed. There are 3 basic kinds of plumbers (licensing levels) as i understand it, apprentices, journeymen and master plumbers.

Humans in pants that have to bend down or that often work on their knees under sinks will have that problem, even brain surgeons and playwrights.

Many states require a license for hair dressers, and DOGS!

If you don’t think electricians and plumbers, etc. are high-knowledge jobs, i’d guess you don’t have a great understanding of the professions.

Standard liberal/MSM doctrine. If you dare show them for the dolts they are they launch a character assassination campaign.

I ‘got it’ when I first read your post - a lot of my own humor is on the subtle side, and there are plenty of folks here who appreciate that art form, but I’ve found that throwing in a /s or similar can help reduce the flamethrowing by those who don’t...

Just so we are clear, no, someone working as aplumber for a plumbing business does not need to carry alicense, but all plumbing business need to be licensed. Some license categories cover plumbing as a general contractor license, or, if it’s just plumbing, they need the proper plumbing license for the type of work being done.
