I’ve seen Firefox do that for several hours at a stretch. I fix it by flushing the cache files under Tools->Clear Private Data. Sometimes shutting down the web browser and restarting it will work, too.

btw, I whack my pc case with a 20 oz Framing Hammer when it gets sluggish. That always speeds it up.
