Sarah Palin to visit Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin will appear at a rally Thursday in Bangor as she winds up a series of campaign stops taking her from the South to New England.

The Maine Republican Party said the doors will open at 8 a.m. at the Bangor International Airport maintenance hangar, where the rally is scheduled to start an hour later. Party Chairman Mark Ellis encouraged supporters to arrive early because a big crowd is expected.

"We are already seeing enormous interest in Gov. Palin's visit to Maine," said Jeff Grappone, spokesman for the McCain-Palin campaign in New England, who expects a crowd in the thousands.

The Alaska governor's visit comes just days after her husband, Todd, made a series of campaign appearances in Maine's 2nd District. On Sunday, Todd Palin stopped at Dysart's Restaurant and truck stop in Hermon, a popular destination for office-seekers, and at Harry's Motor Sports in Presque Isle. On Saturday, he made an appearance at Moosehead Trading Post in Palmyra.

Sarah Palin's visit also comes a day after Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden campaigned in New Hampshire. Palin is expected to also campaign there before her Bangor rally.

Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, visited the state shortly before he won his party's Maine caucuses in February, speaking to supporters at a packed rally in Bangor. No additional Maine visits by Obama or Biden had been announced by Monday, said Jessica Santillo, spokeswoman for the Obama-Biden campaign in Maine.

While much has been said about the McCain-Palin campaign focusing on Maine's sprawling 2nd Congressional District in hopes of securing its electoral vote, Grappone said Monday the whole state is in play.

"There is evidence to show Maine is competitive and up for grabs," Grappone said.

The last ME poll was 3 weeks ago, and it had Obama at +5 in ME, right now ME is closer then NH is.

I know this is a longshot. But if McCain takes all Bush states except IA, NM, and CO, but flips NH and manages to win 1 EV from Maine, it would end up 270-268 for McCain. You think the DEMs would lose it if that happens?

That is a VERY plausible scenario too.

its a last case strategy...

but we are working three electoral strategies right now.

its good you have discovered last case on your own.

there is a 274 projection as well.

That scenario is very possible.

My sister-in-law is a marginal moonbat living in northern Maine and if her district gave up that vote to put McCain/Palin over the top I probably won't be able to get near her for 4 years.

I would guess that the 274 projection is Bush 2004 minus IA and NM. As to a third strategy, I would have to guess that involves flipping PA, which means McCain could lose a couple more Bush 2004 states but still win.

I asked on another thread last night why are they visiting NH and ME, and not going to CO. Maybe they are looking at this 270-268 scenario. Bottom line is the campaign stops are dictated by internal polling, which must look better than public, since they are still visiting PA as well.

I would LOVE to see her do a stop in Newton, Massachusetts, Barney Frank’s hometown. I would LOVE to hear her attack him there on the the steps of City Hall.

Yeah she might get lots of boos but I think it would play well nationwide - getting attacked by Barneyworld.

I question whether the whole state is up for grabs, but it's possible that the Second Congressional District is.

Just an anecdote, but my husband and I took a leaf peeping drive last week and were counting McCain-Palin and Obama lawn signs. We figured about 50 to 1 for McCain-Palin.

And we know some life-long, dyed-in-the-wool Democrats who say that "no way" are they voting for Obama.

Been driving by the Bangor McCain campaign office for the past week and every day there are more and more cars out front, looks like a WHOLE LOT of activity going on there.

Steven King has his Obama sign on his front lawn, of course, uber-moonbat that he is.

Yup.

We drove for quite a while before seeing a single Obama sign.

Will this venue be large enough to accommodate thousands that are expected? Or is it just another opportunity to disappoint those who wish to see her?
