Today's socially conscious student finds it tough to keep up with all the latest buzzwords. He wants to be for "social justice" and against "institutional racism." He's keen to be seen as an "environmentalist," a "multiculturalist" and an "anti-imperialist."
The list, so to speak, goes on.
Wouldn't life be simpler if all the correct labels could be captured in just one word?
That magic word is here, and it's taking college campuses by storm.
The abracadabra bon mot is "sustainability."
In Minnesota, you'll find talk of sustainability at institutions ranging from public giants such as the University of Minnesota to community colleges, as well as private liberal arts colleges such as Macalester, St. Olaf and St. Thomas. Across the nation, institutions of higher education are adding sustainability to their strategic goals, and hiring a growing army of coordinators and bureaucrats to make it a reality on campus. Umbrella groups are popping up like mushrooms, bearing tongue-twisting names like the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development and the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium.
But what, exactly, does "sustainability" mean? It has the ring of improving the environment, and conjures up images of low-voltage light bulbs and farmers markets. If so, say many folks, bring it on.
Some institutions of higher learning, such as the University of Minnesota, do have a scientific, environmental focus and initiatives led by biologists and ecologists. But to a significant extent, the beauty of "sustainability" is that it can mean whatever you want it to mean.
In many cases, folks with a burning desire to transform the world are using the concept to piggy-back on legitimate environmental concerns, and get a foot in the door for every leftist cause under the sun.

Ping me if you find one I've missed.
It never ends. There’s always some codeword for restricting the freedom of the masses in order for the beknighted to save us.
I’m not even going to bother to read the comments from the peanut gallery at the Strib.....
It’s too bad words like “diversity” and “sustainability” are used as tools of government intervention and force by the left and sell outs on the right. Fundamentally there is nothing wrong with said words and they are actually a good thing.
Why isn’t the rationale of ‘sustainability’ ever applied to something with clear, real world consequences — like whether Medicare and Social Security are ‘sustainable.’
You tote some self respect via conviction my FRiend.
Like minds....
My truck crapped out on me this afternoon.....
I just don’t need anymore grief in my life, right now....

The easy counter to the “sustainability” argument is that socialism is inherently unstable and inefficient, and thus is unsustainable.
It is unable to provide what it promises, and continually demands more resources to provide less functionality. In addition, socialists seem to lack pattern recognition, treating the failure of socialism with pseudo-religious denial instead of objectively revising failed theory.
Ironically, socialism matters more to socialists than solving any problem. In fact, they demonstrate indifference and even hostility to any means of reform, repair, or improvement that does not conform to their doctrines.
As such, socialism is almost the very definition of “unsustainable.”
How 'bout just one:
It's the liberals' motto...
Free speech for me, but not for thee.
“Sustainability:” keeping small builders from competing with big developers. I know of environmentalist front women who’ve worked directly for such developers and then indirectly in local politics.
It's a myth that sustainability is "mostly about the environment," they assured their audience. Its reach extends to issues ranging from "environmental racism" and "domestic partnerships" to "gender equity" and "fair trade."
Macalester. Why are we not surprised?
iz reloading your own ammo sustainability?
now you’re cooking with Crisco! I can agree with this logic wholeheartedly... only self-actualized individualism can be sustainable... keep this thread going!
The correct definition of sustainable has to be botched to fit the false doctrines of the day.
Trees are the greatest sustainable resource for building materials and the rules to make a house green involves using less trees. Environmentalists disapprove of the Sustainable Forest Initiative.
The illegitimate basstirds are steelin our languige an givin it back to the old country yourapeeins!!!
It’s also the virtual definition of “Moral Hazzard” which just creamed our unsustainable mortgage madness due to the Communutty Redevelopment Act signed by Jimmy “the peanut head” Carter, Janet “the man” Reno of Clinton infamy and now by Barney “JuicyFruit” Frank and Nancy “stretch” Pelousie!!!
“’Sustainability’ is but the latest euphemism for ‘subsistence’.” (c) Clint Williams
The abracadabra bon mot is "sustainability."
I am a Mechanical Engineer with 15 years in steam power (coal and nuclear), a brief stint in chemical plant operation, and lately am doing large HVAC design for commercial and industrial customers.
I can't tell you how disgusted I feel these days when in a meeting with an Architect or a customer and they start spouting LEED, Green, and Sustainability. I struggle to keep my mouth shut because I am not in a position that I can tell them to stuff if, but it makes me feel ill.
People with NO engineering background are making engineering decisions based on feel good PC movement propaganda. We are in trouble.
