Palin has mixed record as fiscal conservative
Yahoo News ^ | Oct 12,2008 | MATT VOLZ, Associated Press Writer

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president, bills herself as a fiscal conservative. But her record looks little like the classic conservative who favors less government and lower taxes. In a state with no income tax or sales tax, she gained prominence by raising taxes on the most influential industry in Alaska: Big oil. She then used that money to boost the annual bonus each Alaskan receives from the government. This spring, Palin signed an operating budget that authorized roughly $11 billion in spending — more than $16,000 for every man, woman and child in Alaska. That amounted to a 28 percent spending increase. At the time, she told state lawmakers she had three goals: "To slow the growth of government, live within our means and save for the future." The budget did set aside money to help pay for schools beyond next year and also socked away more than $1 billion for a rainy day. In a state flush with money and a multibillion-dollar surplus, there are plenty of temptations to go on a spending spree. And in that context, Palin did resist those urges, vetoing more than $250 million in projects from the public works budget, the second consecutive year she angered legislators by cutting their pet capital projects.

AP again tries to slur Governor Palin but the story just doesn't quite match the headline.

where is the headline that Obama is 100% socialist, the most liberal member of the senate, and supports raising taxes?

I knew it would get ugly, but the attacks we’ve seen on this woman piling up recently are getting pretty extreme.

I’m almost tempted to just turn off any and all news sources except FR.

Hmm, made state government smaller by giving people their money rather than increasing its budget. Sounds like a fiscal conservative to me.

And since when does the mainstream media empathize with eeeeeviiillll oil companies paying taxes?!?!?

Operating Budget increased because of the new Tax rebates for oil exploration also included in the new tax system. But the AP wouldn’t know that...

I have quit watching all news - including Fox News, except for special programs like Hannity’s America at 6:00 PT.

My mom called me from Indiana and said Hannity has something special he is going to talk about tonight.

LOL!

Imagine that!

Returning state income to the taxpayers of Alaska, instead of finding more gay parades to fund, more gay books for the library, or spending it on consulting fees to lovers and friends, (*cough* *cough* Bawney Fwank).

She should be ashamed of herself!

Yup.
That's the biggest scandal of the last 30 seconds...

i wasn’t aware conservatives were against sales taxes. Thats new to me. Sales taxes at least ppl have a choice to decide what to buy and not buy. Income taxes, ppl have no choice but to pay the taxes

Hey crAP. That $16,000 for "every man, woman and child" is not much more than the what the following states spend just on an (crappy) education for their children every year:

*New York ($12,930)
*District of Columbia ($12,801)
*Vermont ($11,128)
*Connecticut ($10,788)

I can’t even watch Fox News anymore. This afternoon they had report after report about Obama. One lady was interviewed on the street and asked which candidate she would trust to give her advice and she said Obama. When she was asked why she said “because he’s honest”. I almost choked on my coffee. Hardly any news about McCain or Pallin this afternoon unless it’s negative. I rely on FR more and more for my news.

Oh my God! Those poor Oil Companies being taxed so harshly. And then giving these ill gotten gains to the citizens of Alaska ... what will she do next!

I thought that the libs HATED the oil companies? I thought Osama’s plan was for a windfall profits tax on “Big Oil” to give tax brakes to the “poor”?

I'll agree, but at least you can't say they have mixed records as fiscal conservatives.
