Efforts on global warming chilled by economic woes (yes, it's still Bush's fault)

The economic free fall gripping the nation may bring down one of the main environmental objectives: capping the greenhouse gases that are blamed for global warming.

Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate, and both presidential candidates, continue to rank tackling global warming as a chief goal next year. But the focus on stabilizing the economy probably will make it more difficult to pass a law to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. At the very least, it will push back when the reductions would have to start.

As one Republican senator put it, the green bubble has burst.

"Clearly it is somewhere down the totem pole given the economic realities we are facing," said Tom Williams, a spokesman for Duke Energy Corp., an electricity producer that has supported federal mandates on greenhouse gases. Duke is a member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, an association of businesses and nonprofit groups that has lobbied Congress to act.

Just months ago, chances for legislation passing in the next Congress and becoming law looked promising. The presidential candidates support mandatory cuts and a Democratic majority is ready to act on the problem after years of the Bush administration's resisting federal controls.

But the most popular remedy for slowing global warming, a mechanism know as cap-and-trade, could put further stress on a teetering economy.

Under such a system, the government would establish a market for carbon dioxide by giving or selling credits to companies with operations that emit greenhouse gases. The companies can then choose whether to invest in technologies to reduce emissions to meet targets or instead buy credits from other companies who have already met them.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., said that in light of the economic downturn,

This is where I wish McCain would make it loud and clear that if Obama is elected he will sign another Executive Ban on offshore drilling.

with less cars, less business, less spending, won’t the downturn reduce global warming. There is less pollution and less carbon being produced now. They should be happy.

The current world-wide economic downturn is nothing less than a preview of what things would be like with “carbon taxes” and various other “global-warming” strictures.

The irony is that THIS economic collapse is EXACTLY what the eco-freaks want: they WANT a world in which nobody can afford to drive a car (except themselves, of course...), a world in which everyone is stuffed like sardines into Japanese-style mass transit, and all live in government-assigned mass housing.

Take a look at today’s Moscow, for a sneak peek.

Building more nuclear power plants would reduce carbon emission, create jobs, and stop the flow of money going overseas to to oil producing states all at the same time. Also, nuclear energy is the only practical means of producing all the added electricity that converting water into hydrogen or powering hundreds of thousands (or millions of) new electric cars would require.

John McCain touched on nuclear in the debate. Barak Obama was quick to say “yeah me too.” Senator McCain let him get away with that. He needs to draw a clear distinction on their differences concerning reprocessing and storage. If Obama is elected president, I predict that a whole bunch of useless windmills will get built, but not a single nuclear plant.

We don't need to spend money on global warming because it is cyclical. Scientists can prove that g.w. has no effect on temps.

We better pay more attention to the fact we have NOT HAD any sunpots for almost 2 years!

I keep praying for this global warming to be a reality. I don’t like the ideas of paying record prices for winter heating bills.

Don't worry - When McCain gets elected, he's gonna put Algore in charge of our fight against global warming.

That's what he said last week.

I’m so worried about Globull Warming that I think I’ll go shovel the snow from last night off of my deck here in SE Idaho. Reports of 14” in Rupert, ID overnight.

These GW morons will be scrambling for an explanation when we start getting crop failures because of cold summer weather.

Oh wait, I forgot, its now “Climate Change” which covers everything.

They can afford to abandon the “Global Warming” lie, because they’ve found a quicker, more effective method to destroy American Freedom, the American economy, and our way of life.
The liberals will manage the “bailout”, and as we’ll see in a few moments, it will include bailing out America’s enemies around the world.

Well, get ready. The data indicate that earth's temperature has been steady or cooling since 1998.

Sober scientists, those looking for truth and not grants, those with little sympathy for Algore's pocketbook, are concerned about the lack of sunspot activity sending us into a cooling cycle.

I fart in Algore's direction.

Concerns about global warming will quickly fade as under a President Obama the cost of gasoline will be close to $5 per gallon and with the new carbon taxes most of us will be worrying about freezing during the winter as we cannot afford to heat our homes.

Ask a global warning alarmist to sign a statement saying there judgment should not be trusted if global warming becomes a non-issue, that they will not participate in politics any longer or burden us with their views. I haven’t met one yet that will do it.
