'Suicide net' for bridge

October 12, 2008 12:00am Article from: The Sunday Telegraph

SAN FRANCISCO: A giant suicide net will be hung beneath San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge in a $75 million bid to catch people trying to jump to their deaths.

Authorities voted almost unanimously for the stainless steel structure, which will not disrupt views from the landmark bridge.

The prevention net, estimated to cost from $A60 to $A75 million, is hoped to save the lives of the 20 people who jump from the bridge every year, on average.

After considering a range of methods to stop suicidal people jumping, the Golden Gate Transportation Districts board of directors voted 14 to one for the net yesterday.

Alternatives included erecting fences or barriers, which would have marred spectacular water views.

The decision follows years of engineering studies and debate on suicide prevention.

But the net will still need extra permits before it can go ahead and is subject to an environmental review before work can start. It is expected to take up to three years to build.

Mmk, so I jump to the net, then I jump again.

I guess if you’re so far gone you require a single motion to get you to the bottom you better hurry. You only have 3 years.

and is subject to an environmental review...

I can already see the ecowackos carping about the poor seagulls being mangled in that hideous death-net.

I thought there was a fiscal problem in California, no money for wasteful projects like this.

There are still tall buildings out there without nets, and a suicide in the bay is a lot less inconveniencing that one on the pavement in the city.

No to mention the aesthetics of adding a huge net under that iconic bridge. It would be like placing mattresses around the bottom of the Empire State Building.

It’s $75 million Australian, which is more like 35-40 million US.

They must really be confident of an Obama victory or they would have it ready for Nov. 5 as the population of SF heads briskly downward into the churning waters of the bay following McCain’s victory.

for that amount could they put another lane for traffic, S.F is the WORST city in the USA for having traffic jams on their bridges. Don´t they know the 20 people a year will just go find another bridge?

There’s so much wrong about this I don’t know where to start.

And California wants to jump onto the bail out bandwagon. Forget that!! Let them jump, they will just go somewhere else to do it anyway. What is it, there is some prestige in jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge??
