A group of San Francisco first-graders took an unusual field trip to City Hall on Friday to toss rose petals on their just-married lesbian teacher - putting the public school children at the center of a fierce election battle over the fate of same-sex marriage.
The 18 Creative Arts Charter School students took a Muni bus and walked a block at noon to toss rose petals and blow bubbles on their just-married teacher Erin Carder and her wife Kerri McCoy, giggling and squealing as they mobbed their teacher with hugs.
Mayor Gavin Newsom, a friend of a friend, officiated.
A parent came up with the idea for the field trip - a surprise for the teacher on her wedding day.
"She's such a dedicated teacher," said the school's interim director Liz Jaroflow.
But there was a question of justifying the field trip academically. Jaroflow decided she could.
"It really is what we call a teachable moment," Jaroflow said, noting the historic significance of same-sex marriage and related civil rights issues. "I think I'm well within the parameters."
Nonetheless, the excursion offers Proposition 8 proponents fresh ammunition for their efforts to outlaw gay marriage in California, offering a real-life incident that echoes their recent television and radio ads.
"It's just utterly unreasonable that a public school field trip would be to a same-sex wedding," said Chip White, press secretary for the Yes on 8 campaign. "This is overt indoctrination of children who are too young to have an understanding of its purpose."
The trip illustrates the message promoted by the campaign in recent days, namely that unless Prop. 8 passes on Nov. 4, children will learn about same-sex marriage in school.

Okay - this is our future if people don't start fighting harder. One way to fight harder is to defeat Barack Hussein Obama; his wife Michelle has promised to answer the phone in the White House (are they going to keep calling it the "White" House if they win?) and she has vowed to be the best friend "gays" have ever had.
I live in the SF East Bay....Two people knocked on our door about a month ago and asked us to support prop 8 and we said we were voting for it. However, all the polls suggest it’s a tight race. Frankly I’m slightly annoyed the church I attend hasn’t mentioned it....
Decent in the way the O is decent?
We either protect children or we don't. When our government and schools refuses to, we as parents MUST!
The government is using tax supported government schools to promote the religious worldview of homosexuals and destroy the religion of Christians.
This is merely one more example.
Also, the California courts ruled earlier this year that parents have no right to “opt-out” their kids.
We either protect children or we don’t. When our government and schools refuses to, we as parents MUST!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
As citizens we have a duty to **SHUT DOWN** government schools!
It is past time that we drove a stake through the heart of the government school beast.
It is past time that citizens demanded that every government teacher find a job in the private sector.
They say that if kids went to a normal wedding it would be alright so why is it not alright to have the kids go to a homo wedding during school
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
What would these homosexual Marxists have to say if the government drove kids to a Christian marriage ceremony....or....how about to a Mormon Temple to see the brides and grooms leaving the Temple? What about a High Mass to celebrate a Catholic wedding?
Hey! They’re into diversity aren’t they?
C’mon, this is Stan’s Fag Disco. Many of these kids have lesbian parents anyway.
Does this not make anyone angry? This whole country is getting to be good vs. evil. This is evil crap going on and I am getting more and more open to violence playing a part in the solution to such matters. It is getting way out of hand. Our candidates tell us to mellow out at their rallies, our judges replace our laws with their laws, our parents are standing around with their thumbs up their a$$es while evil adults are stealing their children’s innocence
If the parents agree, the teacher can take them for a visit to Charles Manson’s prison cell.
LOL
that’s when their tolerance goes out the window.
Maybe I should ask the teachers at my childrens school to take the kids on a field trip to see a normal wedding and have McCain buttons on along with vote yes on 2.
here in Florida our ballot question is two for normal marriage
here i florida I have not seen or heard of one AD in favour of keeping normal marriage
The media here in my area have no covered the ballot question at all.
I called them up and asked them would they be going to do a story on this and will they be explaining what the ballot question is
They said they will not nor will they be explaining it as people do not care
their words not mine
Now I have no idea why but it just seems here in Florida the pro family groups etc are not getting the word out and the Church’s are no mentioning it
I am worried here that we may end up with homo marriage if the word is not out to all like it is in CA
I was talking to a neighbour last night along with my wife and we said we could end up with another civil war but this time it is left versus right.
We are already in a war right now with no violence but soon with the way things are going it could come down to violence
The left have been using violence for a long time.
The union of teachers need to be closed down so if any republican is in it then leave as my wife did.
If republicans or conservatives live in states like MA, CT,VT,RI then move out to either NH,VA,NC,FL,AZ,NM so they keep those states red and support a red state.
Let them have their liberal utopia and we can just watch them screw it up.
In the mean time we’ll have a strong defence, strong military, good schools and teachers, we’ll have morals and respect, etc etc etc
they can have the illegals, criminals, child molesters, lazy welfare work shy folk, homo’s, perverts.
Let them keep thinking they can talk to them and have therapy
Colleges and universities are not unionized and look at the damage Marxist professors are doing there.
So....Closing down the teachers union will never be enough. Please remember it was **teachers** who made the NEA what it is. Those same teachers would still be teaching in the government schools.
The solution: Begin the process of privatizing universal K-12 education. It is not enough to shut down the NEA. We need to shut down the entire government school system.
Even with a entirely privatized system of K-12 education we will still have a struggle.
very true and very well put
While charter schools are funded by tax dollars they are not public in the sense that the traditional school is. Children are voluntarily placed in this specific school by their parents and can withdraw and attend their local public school at any time.
I agree, either two moms or two dads, so it makes total sense they would support the lesbian marriage of a teacher.
If enough parents in this school disagree with the children attending, then they will withdraw their kids, the money that comes with them, and the school will die a natural death.
I think the int was that the school is not privateky funded. Given that it’s in SF, I doubt many of the Roommate Daddies or Heather Mommies are going to pull their kids out in protest. As another poster mentioned, it;s weird that the wedding was on a school day. Almost like the teacher expected to be ‘surprised’ by the kids showing up. Greater showing on a school day than if they had to go to the wedding on a Saturday.
