Former baseball star Canseco detained at US border

Jose Canseco was held for nearly 10 hours by immigration authorities after agents said they stopped the former baseball star as he attempted to bring a fertility drug from Mexico, his lawyer said Friday.

Canceco was detained at San Diego's San Ysidro border crossing Thursday after agents searched his vehicle and said they found human chorionic gonadotropin, which is illegal without a prescription, said his attorney, Gregory Emerson.

Emerson declined to say if Canseco — who admitted to using steroids in a 2005 book that also alleged steroid use by other baseball players — had the drug, which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency for use in males. The drug helps restore production of testosterone lost in steroid users.

The New York Daily News earlier reported the stop.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Virginia Kice, said Canseco was ordered to appear in federal court in San Diego "related to an alleged smuggling violation" Thursday at a U.S. border crossing. She declined to elaborate.

Canseco has not been charged with a crime, Kice said. If he were to be charged, it would happen at his court appearance.

Emerson said Canseco was ordered to appear in court Tuesday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection released Canseco after he agreed to allow ICE agents to search his Los Angeles-area home, Emerson said. About 10 ICE agents searched the home in the attorney's presence Friday as Canseco was returning from San Diego.

"They found nothing. They took nothing," Emerson said.

Authorities held Canseco for 9 1/2 hours at the crossing across the border from Tijuana, Mexico, Emerson said.

Geez, I thought he was dead. On second thought got him confused with Lyle Alza

On the other hand, can['t wait to hear him testify in what will be the Roger Cledmens case.

Maybe there is karma.

Couldn’t he find a doctor to prescribe it for him?

You would think. Why didn’t he simply ask Roger for some pills?

My wife and I went to China shortly after she became pregnant last year. When she arrived she started bleeding and we went to the ER where they gave her HcG injections for a couple weeks and gave us a supply to use for a couple months. After two prior miscarriages without HcG, today we have a beautiful daughter. While hCG injections may not be accepted medical practice in the US, they are standard medical practice in China for a threatened miscarriage. Possibly due to China’s “One Child Policy,” maintaining a pregnancy is much more important in China than in the US, so it certainly makes sense that physicians in China would value a pregnancy much more than those in the US. The medication, Ovidrel, is based on the action of hCG to maintain pregnancy so possibly there is some validity in the Chinese practice. At a website describing Ovidrel, it states, “In pregnancy, hCG, secreted by the placenta, maintains the viability of the corpus luteum to provide the continued secretion of estrogen and progesterone necessary to support the first trimester of pregnancy.” Additionally, hCG injections are routinely given to women “to trigger ovulation or to lengthen the luteal phase.”

My wife had a prescription when we returned from China, but I don’t blame Jose at all for trying without one.

This doesn’t look like anything sinister, are they sure he didn’t have a prescription for it. Like the article says, it’s for testosterone replacement therapy.

There are a whole slew of former steroid abusers who are on that treatment, essentially for life because the family jewels shut down natural testosterone production and shrivel up while they abused ‘roids (synthetic testosterone) and sometimes they are never able to get fully back in gear after the abuser quits.

Steroid withdrawl can be worse than any drug, for months the former user is basically a ennuch. All that unnatural muscle vanishes and then some, they gain weight, they are depressed (the mental effects of testosterone deficiency can be profound). It takes months for the testes to spool back up. And sometimes they are permanently impaired.

I think you set the standard for convincing any male to never take roids.

We need you as Surgeon General.

Where's that pic of him going back to the wall to catch a drive, it bounced off his head into the seats for a home run.

When I first read ‘fertility’ drug, I thought the author was trying to be polite, and implied Jose was bringing something back to help his ‘Bat’.

Most males who go on “the juice” are either too young and dumb to think too far ahead or they’re athletes who are willing to sacrifice absolutely anything for an edge.

The real scandal of steroids in baseball was that it had been allowed to reach the point (like the use of illegal labor in contracting) where “everybody does it” and if YOU didn’t you’d be out of the running and out of a job.
