Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, locked in an increasingly tight and bitter election contest with Democrat Al Franken, said Friday that his campaign would halt negative advertising in a race recently dominated by it.
Coleman, a Republican, said the unstable economy demands that the race focus on issues. He said he would also ask independent groups advertising on his behalf to pull negative ads, although by law they are not required to do so.
"I decided I was not all that interested in returning to Washington for another six years based on the judgment of voters that I was not as bad as the other guys," Coleman said. "I want folks to vote for me, and not against the other folks."
Coleman said it could take a few days to pull negative messages from the airwaves, the Internet and direct-mail pleas. He also left himself room to draw contrasts "in experience, judgement and temperament."

You're going to have to convince me they have gonads. Christ if you cant beat a twit like Franken. Then its time to start over.
McCain/Palin will win VA/NC/OH/FL.
They're gonna win the race for the White House. The only question is how many of the following states they take along for the ride: CO, NH, WI, PA, MN, MI, IA. With still over three weeks to go, I think they're in good shape to take all but MI and IA.
In 3 1/2 weeks there will be a ton of people on FR talking about McCain's "comeback" and how he "took off the gloves" and all sorts of other nonsense. And when the polls mysteriously close (read: stop oversampling Democrats so drastically) His campaign has been very consistent so far, and quite effective. I see no reason to expect major changes over the next few weeks, except we could see him return to Michigan.
Then by all means stay home and cry.
It took 20 posts to come across someone who gets it. That’s really sad.
With a heavy heart, I concur.
I’m opening a business selling white flags to Republican candidates.
A heavy heart? You just admitted that you took your ball and went home in 1999. Quite a convincing story, though. LOL
The negative ads by Norm and the idiot Franken have gotten Barkley up to 18%. This is exactly what happened in 1998 when Jesse Ventura stormed past both Norm and Hubert III at the finish line. Norm knows exactly what he’s doing and isn’t going to make the same mistake again. At this point, every negative ad by both he and Franken are ads for Barkley. Norm’s in the lead. He’ll beat Franken. He needs to avoid losing to Barkley. Today’s move was a good one.
“in experience, judgement and temperament.”
Is he really stopping them then?
MC,
In his defense, I must say that the MSM has grabbed onto this shit like we are all dressed in sheets ready to string some people up. Asswipe Gergen is at it again tonight saying McCain needs to “calm down” his crowds. They are trying to make this into something it’s not. I think he’s just doing damage control. They’re happy to distract from their boy.
Exactly right about these politicians really do know how to run campaigns. I had heard the third party dude was making traction up there. But 18% is fairly impressive. I bet you've hit the nail on the head.
What, (with all do respects), gives you any hope for the Republican party as currently constructed?
OK,
Thanx for slapping me in the face. I needed that. Starting to sound like a few others that moan and groan regularly. Sorry, just wasn’t using my head, feeling sorry for myself.
If he says he’ll change his position and Drill Anwr and offshore within 50 miles , he might win going away.. or not.
Native Minnesotan BumP
Sarah Palin and Mike Pence, for starters.
Buy a bunch! You can rip them into shreds and sell them as bandages when Obama's goons riot on November 4th and 5th after he loses.
Americans are in for a long hard ride.
We all know who the press accuses of dirty politics. We also know who is really guilty of it.
Very well said and I couldn’t agree more! I am with you 100% — shame some others don’t have a clue about when to attack and when to pull back. Glad they are not running any campaigns.
