Sorry, Dad, I'm Voting for Obama (Christopher Buckley)
The Daily Beast ^ | 10/10/2008 | Christopher Buckley

Posted on 10/10/2008 8:46:20 AM PDT by Numbers Guy

Let me be the latest conservative/libertarian/whatever to leap onto the Barack Obama bandwagon. It’s a good thing my dear old mum and pup are no longer alive. They’d cut off my allowance.

Or would they? But let’s get that part out of the way. The only reason my vote would be of any interest to anyone is that my last name happens to be Buckley—a name I inherited. So in the event anyone notices or cares, the headline will be: “William F. Buckley’s Son Says He Is Pro-Obama.” I know, I know: It lacks the throw-weight of “Ron Reagan Jr. to Address Democratic Convention,” but it’ll have to do.

I am—drum roll, please, cue trumpets—making this announcement in the cyberpages of The Daily Beast (what joy to be writing for a publication so named!) rather than in the pages of National Review, where I write the back-page column. For a reason: My colleague, the superb and very dishy Kathleen Parker, recently wrote in National Review Online a column stating what John Cleese as Basil Fawlty would call “the bleeding obvious”: namely, that Sarah Palin is an embarrassment, and a dangerous one at that. She’s not exactly alone. New York Times columnist David Brooks, who began his career at NR, just called Governor Palin “a cancer on the Republican Party.”

What a pathetic article. He won’t vote for McCain because he’s snarly? He likes Obama because he writes his own books? LOL. Chris, come out of the closet already.

I guarantee Christopher totally agrees with his father’s stance on drug legalization.

Is this just bad satire?

He's known for that.

Not surprised at all that Chris would hate and despise Holy Rollers.

Seeing the author's name I thought the article would be a satire, alas...

What a pathetic uninformed fool!

His dad hasn’t been dead very long and Christopher is addressing the title to him in a direct snub.

SIMPLY UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HERE’S THE MONEY QUOTE FROM THE RETARDED, STUPID, IGNORANT, PRETENTIOUS, DUMB, STUPID, INEPT, INCOMPETENT, FRICKING MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“But having a first-class temperament and a first-class intellect, President Obama will (I pray, secularly) surely understand that traditional left-politics aren’t going to get us out of this pit we’ve dug for ourselves. If he raises taxes and throws up tariff walls and opens the coffers of the DNC to bribe-money from the special interest groups against whom he has (somewhat disingenuously) railed during the campaign trail, then he will almost certainly reap a whirlwind that will make Katrina look like a balmy summer zephyr.”

A machine-party dem. who promises with great passion to be a traditional lib, who promises every minute of every day, non-stop till he’s blue in the face, who promises and promises and promises to be a FRICKING LIB!!!!!!!!!! will not, in fact, be a lib.

OK. It is one thing to say McCain-Palin is a crummy republican ticket. That can be legitimately argued from multiple angles.

What cannot be argued with any seriousness of conservative thought whatsoever is that somehow Obama is a better choice. OR that somehow Obama is more qualified than Palin.

THis Buckley character is an intellectual midget.

I'm making a mental list of all these turncoats, and win or lose come November, I'll NEVER trust these so-called "conservatives" again. What a weak-minded bunch they are.

He inherited a self-obsessed passion for wordsmithing, I guess, but missed out on the brain part.

The country club GOP set hate anything that has to do with regular, middle-class, flyover-country Americans. They are just like the liberal latte crowd: They hate real people, so any attempt to appeal to real people is labeled “rank populism.” These are the same Republicans who hated Ronald Reagan when he was in power, and only claim today to have support his legacy.

This guy is living proof that intelligence may not be genetic.

He's intelligent. He just has no sense. Intelligence is just the processor. It doesn't govern what gets put on the old hard drive. Intelligence gives you vocabulary, but doesn't inform you of which words to use, what thoughts to have. Intelligence gives you the ability to percieve, but doesn't give you the ability to judge or discern. And it doesn't do anything to combat your emotional baggage, which I suspect is Chris Buckley's problem.

My sibling is a Bible literalist and diehard Obama supporter. I’m an atheist and diehard Republican. How did that happen? LOL

I thought this was a parody when I read
"It’s a good thing my dear old mum and pup are no longer alive. They’d cut off my allowance."
I'm sure your liberal buddies are glad your parents are dead too. I'm not glad of their death, but I am glad they don't have to see how their son has stabbed everything they stood for in the back.

Now that his father has died he’s afraid he won’t get invited to any Washington power parties.

What a goof! Just in case we couldn’t answer the “don’t you know who I AM???” question, he sees fit to answer it for us in the first few sentences of this idiotic contribution.

Not the slightest shred of evidence of that.

I would guess your sibling read Revelations and decided the Anti-Christ was a neat guy or something.

BTW, being an atheist doesn't mean you have to vote against your own self-interest.

Whole answer in a nutshell.

He also claims to be a libertarian which can at times mean very liberal.
Plus he probably doesn’t have the brain power of his dad, so just like Ron Reagan Jr., he goes to the left in politics to get a pay day.
