Obama buys airtime on networks for anniversary of Black Tuesday in 1929
By MARGARET TALEV McClatchy Newspapers
Barack Obama is buying a half-hour slot on television networks in prime time Oct. 29, the anniversary of Black Tuesday of 1929, when panic in the stock markets set in ahead of the Great Depression.
Obama, leaving a campaign stop in a diner in Georgetown, Ohio, on Thursday evening, declined to say whether he plans to address the current economic crisis in the context of the depression.
He wouldnt talk about the nature of the programming, saying, "Were going to be talking about it tomorrow."
Linda Douglass, a senior adviser to Obama, confirmed Thursday evening that the campaign has bought time on NBC and CBS.
She said the campaign will buy airtime on Fox, unless the network is carrying a World Series game that night, and that no arrangement had been made with ABC.
Douglass also wouldnt release any information about how much the airtime is costing the campaign or any information about the programming.
The last candidate to make such a purchase was Ross Perot in 1992.
The ads will run six days before the Nov. 4 election, following weeks of economic crisis, including massive stock-market losses, global investor panic and Congress passage of a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street.

Well, if Obama is going to be hitting the economy as a selling point, it seems to me that McCain could counter this by effective ads about tax rates and “the rich”. It would thus negate any message by Obama that the economy is in the tank but he is going to save all his voters by soaking the rich. McCain’s ad could also feature Clinton’s promises of tax cuts and his reneging of that promise very soon after inauguration. And his major message might be “Talk is cheap.”
“Certainly one could argue that the stock markets are reacting to the possibility that the party behind this mortgage back security financial crisis is about to be rewarded at the polls.”
I maintain the same position on this as you do.
Will the Obama children’s choir be singing? Babs singing? Springsteen singing? Will the teen youth militia be doing the colors? Will ACORN t-shirts be handed out? Cigs? Booze? Drugs?
Will George Clooney make an appearance?
Will Obama bring his real birth certificate?
Is Baghdad Bob going to introduce him?
Will the NOI guys be providing secura-TAY?!
Will Obama bring his prayer rug? Recite the call to prayer? Will he be facing Mecca?
Obama has microphones and minions at his disposal hourly but he feels the need to spend millions on air time. Says a lot.
I really don’t know where to begin, this hits me on so many different levels.
1. I am appalled that a candidate can amass so much cash they can afford to do this.
2. I am appalled that in a time of financial crisis, he has this much money to spend. Anyone who really thinks this through should be offended at this crass display of largesse.
3. Where did all this money really come from?
4. The only word to describe his vanity, his hubris, his arrogance, is “colossal.” To think that he is so important that people will want to sit and listen to him lecture us with a boring political speech for 30 minutes.
5. Because this will be so boring, thanks to cable TV, I’ll bet nobody will be watching after the first 5 minutes (except people asleep on the sofa). What else is on? I’m sure I’ll be watching a re-run of “Mythbusters” or maybe there will be a baseball playoff game on.
6. Point #5 shows that the traditional network media has ever dwindling influence on American society.
7. What I would give to see the format consist of 0bama talking away while a very attractive young lady in a low-cut sun dress cuts up some vegetables with a kitchen device as the 20 audience members nod and smile approvingly.
Can you please fix the date in the headline to 1929? Thanks...it’s still listed as 192.
“FNC has a satelite map graphic showing how rezko, ayers, and LOUIS FARAHKAN all live withing walking distance to OBAMA.”
From my best friend—
Well, they did it, didn’t they.
