Things are looking good for marriage amendments in California, Florida and Arizona.
California is the big surprise. After discouraging polls all summer, the latest CBS News/SurveyUSA Today poll shows Prop 8, the California marriage amendment, surging ahead 47 percent to 42 percent, with 10 percent undecided thats a ten point swing since the Yes on Prop 8 campaign ads started airing.
Younger voters are leading the swing against gay marriage, reports CBS News. Why? My best guess is: a lot of them are parents who dont really want their schools teaching their 5 year olds about King and King (See the latest ad, at www.protectmarriage.com.)
BTW, Pepperdines is calling on the Yes on 8 campaign to stop identifying Prof. Richard Peterson as a Pepperdine Law School professor.
Meanwhile the Miami Herald is conceding that polls show the Florida marriage amendment commands a strong majority support.
Getting to 60 percent is a big hurdle, but the undecideds tend to break in favor of marriage amendments.
In Arizona the latest poll shows the marriage amendment is up 49 percent to 40 percent.
Prop 8 will win easily, there was never any doubt, any polls saying otherwise are push polls.
There was an op/ed piece in the LA Times a few weeks ago where and avowed liberal writer (whose name escapes me) wrote how he was for Prop 8 mainly because the institution of marriage has always been a means of strengthening family bonds and giving children a structured and secure environment. I think most people, who are open to the idea of two people having a legal arrangement no matter their gender, acknowledge the importance of the traditional marriage arrangement to children and so will vote for it.
The media here in the Bay Area contends it’s close...just like when it was voted down before.
When the market recovers, I am moving from Mexifornia, for good.
Quick question, when 8 passes what happens to laws like SB777?
Are this laws still on the books and our children taught all this crap or do they get removed from law.
the homo’s are using and have used dirty tactics here in Florida
First they went to court and got everyone who signed the ballot question to go on the Internet
their intimidation never worked
now the question is on the ballot they are using misleading signs to trick the elderly and independents
it says
vote no on 2 protect Florida families
then they use another sign next to it saying Jesus doesn’t discriminate
notice they never use the word gay or homosexual
no they are trying to trick the voter with their Jesus doesn’t discriminate signs
what they do not count on is that many do know what the question is and that we do tell others
so if they want their sham marriage go to MA where it was forced on the people and hopefully one day the people in MA vote their legislature out and get the question on the ballot up there as well
The Hispanic non profits are organizing to fight this in California.
More family values?
From today’s LAT:
“The No on 8 campaign announced rallies in Latino neighborhoods. Los Angeles Unified School District board President Monica Garcia and others will gather at noon today for a rally and to open an office in East Los Angeles.”
And, the institution of marriage has always been defined as a bond between a man and a woman.
I wounder if that small fact was given consideration when highlighting those "strengthening bonds"...
Great News...
The ads are very impactful...
Like the one about the little boy that asks his mommy if it is okay for 2 boys to get married because that is what his teacher said...
I believe it will mean that those marriages will no longer be recognized by the State of California.
However, I’m sure there will be a legal challenge.
And, of course, if the case gets to the CA SC, we know how they will decide.

I don’t think so. For the time being, gay marriage is legal in California. My brother and his partner are getting married in L.A. in late October to try to beat the clock, so to speak. I think marriages conducted before then may be grandfathered in since they were conducted while under the law.
There will be a challenge, however.
Best,
Chris
But, Chris, you yourself use the word partner—not wife or husband. I believe Californians adamantly support the right to gay civil unions and also will overthrow the undemocratic dictates of the so-call Supreme Court. No one likes to invoke a constitutional amendment for this but, frankly, the Gay & Lesbian community could bea little more understanding and a little less demanding. The general public supports tolerance but not more.
