Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott may have more to worry about than just the court of public opinion. Federal investigators are now looking into whether Scott broke the law by campaigning for John McCain.
Officials with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel say they have received so many phone calls from the public that they launched an investigation into Sheriff Scott on Tuesday.
The question is - did he use his position as sheriff to influence an election? If so, he could be in violation of a federal election law called the Hatch Act....

Just a taste of the Stasi that will be in place if Obama gets in there. Fairness Doctrine, etc.
GAG.
This is news, but the Dhim district attorneys that threaten prosecution if anyone says anything that Obama determines is unfair?
What a crock.
Is the goon squad in missouri being investigaged too? I sense a pattern . Speak out about Obama and get smacked around.
Do school teachers that overwhelmingly support and campaign for Obama on the job fall under the Hatch act?
(I'm not talking about misuse of state/county/city property, just the fact that the person in question has a position.)
What is the big deal. I see policmen is uniform all the time standing with Democrats pushing gun control. This is the same crap as no politics in churach unless you are a democrat in a black church. Good Grief.
I don’t think Obama supporters like Oprah & Whoopie would care much for the Fairness Doctrine.
Uh....the Hatch Act only covers federal employees and officials, not elected County sheriffs. There is a big trend here with Obama’s hit squads filing criminal complaints against folks who say bad but truthful things about him. First this sheriff and then those two Texas women who got nasty visits from the Secret Service.
what a nit.
I have looked extensively at this “report” and they breathlessly report about an “investigation” but they don’t actually state what Hatch is supposed to have done wrong.
Such clear B.S.
what about all the obama supporters. my mothers nurses are comming in here home playing obama music.
NC sheriff’s are elected officials and may campaign for themselves or others while in or out of uniform.
Sheriff’s deputies, on the other hand, are county employees and may not campaign.
This whole thing is pure BS.
Which only applies to federal employees. Either NBC is pulling this story out of their arse, or someone at the Office of Special Counsel needs to be fired. Methinks its the former - even a deadwood Carter-era government employee could figure that one out.
“could Governor Palin be in trouble with the Hatch Act for using her official position as Governor to support Candidate Palin?”
You got yourself the makings of a Scrappleface article, there!
Governor Deval Patrick was AWOL this summer running the DNCC. And a Democrat State Committee Woman who was a delegate told me that Public School teachers can go work on political campaigns and get paid their full salary. They can’t get reimbursed for hotels so they stay in homes of local staffers for free. Meanwhile the Substitute Teachers bust the School budget every four years.
His activity is permissible under the Hatch Act.
“Permitted Activities:
Covered state and local employees may:
— run for public office in nonpartisan elections
— campaign for and hold office in political clubs and organizations
— ACTIVELY CAMPAIGN FOR CANDIDATES FOR PUBLIC OFFICE IN PARTISAN AND NONPARTISAN ELECTIONS
— contribute money to political organizations and attend political fundraising functions
The goal here is not to land an actual conviction based on a legal prosecution, but instead to serve as a warning for anyone that would dare to speak against the God-man Hussein Obama.
Complicit local prosecutors, Secret Service, and other federal lackys stand ready to intimidate and enforce Obama’s brand of “truth”.
Just a taste of the Gestapo bullshit that can be expected in an Obama administration.
