McCain's 'that one' comment during debate angers some black Americans

WASHINGTON — It was a moment that stood out in a presidential debate void of many pithy sound bites: "That one," Republican John McCain said contemptuously of Barack Obama, pointing in the general direction of his Democratic rival while discussing energy policies.

Those two small words didn't just leave many pundits cringing, but more significantly, they caused some in the African-American community to accuse McCain of racism in his dismissive treatment of the man aiming to be the first black president in U.S. history.

"It speaks to the fundamental belief of racism: despite all evidence to the contrary, you are inherently beneath me simply by virtue of the melanin content of your skin," Ciji McBride, a 33-year-old sales professional in Los Angeles, said Wednesday.

Don Hammonds of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's also took offence.

"Regardless of intent, it showed Senator McCain to be culturally ignorant, and completely unaware of the implications of what his off-the-cuff statement meant to people of colour," he wrote.

"Whether Senator McCain meant it that way or not, if you are a person of colour, and someone trots out the 'that one' remark, you instantly take it as racist. I know that I did."

Maybe if they would learn to speak proper English instead of Ebonics, they would understand there is no slight.

Oh, sure, and Sarah wearing white is a signal to the KKK.

I never thought all that much about race until the Obama campaign started throwing the race card constantly. If he thinks he’s doing race relations a favor he can think again.

“...Some of us simply don’t care anymore. I’m tired of the racialist crap...”

Me too. I sick of political correctness taken to such extremes. I don't want to be culturally sensitive to Leftists zip wads. I would rather be a called the N-word than suffer the condescending liberal nanny state.

With all due respect, there are about n black comments about whites (where n is a very large number) that tick me off.

I’m sorry, but I didn’t own any slaves, nor my father , nor my grandfather, etc. I owe them nothing.

Obama is a loon, no matter his race If one wants comparable loons, go to any libs arts faculty of your local college.

Now, 93.5% of blacks will vote for Obama instead of 93%.

That is racist

Ok, I don't get it, what is the special racial significance of calling him "that one"? It did startle me a bit when I heard it, it would have been better to say, "Senator Obama, over there," and I recognized it as trying to make your opponent into an object rather than a person.

Was it the same as if he had called him "boy"?

Please get back to me and explain why 95% of blacks will vote for Obama, also please explain exactly what harm could come to anyone because McCain referred to “that one” on a tax issue?

Who cares! I am sick of this race card play when some of THEM are more racist than anyone! They are voting for him ONLY because he is black, because not one of them can name a single accomplishment he has had that qualifies him to be POTUS!

I loved when McCain said "this one"...it was great, not because Obama is black, but because Obama is so not ready to even be in Congress let alone POTUS! As a fellow freeper so eloquently put it---"eff 'em!"

Phony charges of “racism” are a very good thing for the McCain campaign, IMO.

The vast majority of white Americans are not racist and they resent being bullied by being labeled “racist” for innocent comments. Lots of black Americans have become fed up with this nonsense as well.

Those who don’t feel this way are already deep in the tank for 0bama, so all this whining can only help McCain.

Big deal.

98% of the black vote will go to Obama anyway. What are they going to do? REALLY REALLY vote for Obama? Click the lever REALLY hard?

They are always offended by something and this changes nothing.
