You Guys Are Nuts [Andy McCarthy]
We have a disaster here which is what you should expect when you delegate a non-conservative to make the conservative (nay, the American) case. We can parse it eight ways to Sunday, but I think the commentary is missing the big picture.
Here's what Obama needed to do tonight: Convince the country that he was an utterly safe, conventional, centrist politician who may have leftward leanings but will do the right thing when the crunch comes.
Now, as the night went along, did you get the impression that Obama comes from the radical Left? Did you sense that he funded Leftist causes to the tune of tens of millions of dollars? Would you have guessed that he's pals with a guy who brags about bombing the Pentagon? Would you have guessed that he helped underwrite raging anti-Semites? Would you come away thinking, "Gee, he's proposing to transfer nearly a trillion dollars of wealth to third-world dictators through the UN"?
Nope. McCain didn't want to go there. So Obama comes off as just your average Center-Left politician. Gonna raise your taxes a little, gonna negotiate reasonably with America's enemies; gonna rely on our very talented federal courts to fight terrorists and solve most of America's problems; gonna legalize millions of hard-working illegal immigrants.
McCain? He comes off as Center-Right .. or maybe Center-Left ... but, either way, deeply respectful of Obama despite their policy quibbles.
Great. Memo to McCain Campaign: Someone is either a terrorist sympathizer or he isn't; someone is either disqualified as a terrorist sympathizer or he's qualified for public office. You helped portray Obama as a clealy qualified presidential candidate who would fight terrorists.
If that's what the public thinks, good luck trying to win this thing.
With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I'm dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing
Take it out on someone else, pal. I'm fed up to here with the doom-and-gloomers getitng nasty and attacking everyone around them. I'm also tired of you drama queens putting words in my mouth and exaggerting my position in order to enhance yours. I don't have time for this cr@p, or for your coarse and vituperative diatribes directed at me simply because I refuse to cry "woe is me. Woe are all of us." If I want that, I can go hang around Daily KOS.
See ya.
I never attacked you or anyone else, and I NEVER cry “woe is me.”
What I DO, is show my utter contempt for the conditions that we find ourselves in. And I, like you, fight to make change. But I also think it’s normal, healthy and beneficial for people to speak their minds.
Is it wrong to express my dissatisfaction with my choices?
Is it right to gladly and humbly accept the crap-sandwich that ALL of our “leaders” including McCain and Bush have been handing us for years?
Is it right to belittle others for their opinions, especially when their opinion is based on valid concerns?
What part of my coarse and vituperative diatribe do you exactly disagree with?
I am not full of doom and gloom, I’m full of ANGER!!! Raw, pure, raging anger!
Perhaps, you are just offended by my tone, but Allegra, these are not normal circumstances. And anyone who thinks these ARE, is not connecting with reality, IMHO.
Anyone bashing McCain at this point is helping Obama.
No, but it's wrong in my book to fling rude, crass anger at someone just because she refuses to sulk and mope about the state of things. And that tough-guy "pal" stuff doesn't impress me at all.
I don't know where you come from, but where I come from, that's considered ill-mannered.
Perhaps, you are just offended by my tone, but Allegra, these are not normal circumstances.
Damn right, I'm offended by your tone, your foul language directed at me and your lack of manners.
And what the hell would I know about "normal circumstances?" Perhaps I have a better outlook on things because I have seen how bad things can really get.
What do you think you're accomplishing by coarse rudeness? Is that your solution? If that's the way you want to act, go find somebody else to spew your venom on.
I apologize. My anger, as you can see, is deep. I’m over it now, more or less.
But, honestly, Allegra, this is an internet chat room, basically, and I find it a little surprising that you would be offended by my relatively mild rant (by internet standards, that is).
Still and all, I apologize for offending you.
“Horrible choice of an article to post, any conservative who writes this kind of stuff should be required to wear a skirt.”
Or move to Canada.
I’d say the ‘bashing’ of McCain’s ineffective ‘honorable campaign’ schtick finally hit home today with McCain’s answer to a question about holding those responsble for the mortgage/wall street meltdown, and McCain FINALLY naming specific DEMOCRATS like Chris Dodd and Barney Frank, along with Obama.
The response from the crowd was the best Johnny’s gotten since saying ‘Sarah Palin is my choice for Vice President’ in August.
80% of Americans were against the bailout.
95% of Americans ARE ANGRY.
McCain just might have realized, due in large part to the ‘bashing’ how to tap into that anger, and keep the most dangerous candidate since Jimmy Carter out of the Whitehouse.
