You Guys Are Nuts [Andy McCarthy]
We have a disaster here which is what you should expect when you delegate a non-conservative to make the conservative (nay, the American) case. We can parse it eight ways to Sunday, but I think the commentary is missing the big picture.
Here's what Obama needed to do tonight: Convince the country that he was an utterly safe, conventional, centrist politician who may have leftward leanings but will do the right thing when the crunch comes.
Now, as the night went along, did you get the impression that Obama comes from the radical Left? Did you sense that he funded Leftist causes to the tune of tens of millions of dollars? Would you have guessed that he's pals with a guy who brags about bombing the Pentagon? Would you have guessed that he helped underwrite raging anti-Semites? Would you come away thinking, "Gee, he's proposing to transfer nearly a trillion dollars of wealth to third-world dictators through the UN"?
Nope. McCain didn't want to go there. So Obama comes off as just your average Center-Left politician. Gonna raise your taxes a little, gonna negotiate reasonably with America's enemies; gonna rely on our very talented federal courts to fight terrorists and solve most of America's problems; gonna legalize millions of hard-working illegal immigrants.
McCain? He comes off as Center-Right .. or maybe Center-Left ... but, either way, deeply respectful of Obama despite their policy quibbles.
Great. Memo to McCain Campaign: Someone is either a terrorist sympathizer or he isn't; someone is either disqualified as a terrorist sympathizer or he's qualified for public office. You helped portray Obama as a clealy qualified presidential candidate who would fight terrorists.
If that's what the public thinks, good luck trying to win this thing.
With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I'm dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing
If Straight Talk results in socialism, I’ll take Crooked Talk any day of the week. Hell, give me Lombard Street.
>>He defended Johnny Sutton.<<
And McCain hasn’t offered to pardon Ramos if elected. McCarthy was against amnesty, and McCain was for it. WRT the border, neither McCain nor McCarthy is my hero.
My 2 cents?
Debates only matter
1)- to the chattering classes of talking heads, who use them to promote more chatter
2)- if one of the parties makes a big enough impression, good or bad, to be remembered days or weeks later...
The only “debate” ( or poll ) that counts is Election Day.
On that day, the “swing voters”— the bleeding idiots who just can’t make up their feeble little minds- pick the last candidate who made the best impression on them...
...and that is what decides elections.
Yes, we are in the hands of fools, ond dupes.
Look at Washington...
If we give control of all three branches of government to that neophyte communist, this nation is lost.
You are completely off base to accuse me of happy thinking.
My only point is not what happened at the debate, but where we go from here.
Wailing does not help any more than delusional thinking.
I am not engagine in the latter and I was simply encouraging others not to engage in the former.
We are where we are. Let’s focus on salvaging what we can and moving forward, knowing that-—as you and I agree-—we MUST win this election. That takes POSITIVE ACTION, the call for which should not be denigrated as mere positive thinking.
Agreed, I'm with you then. Just hope someone somewhere has McCain's ear and can get him to engage a little more aggressively. But I'll do what I can.
Cheers,
Lloyd
Cheers backatcha! Now let’s get going.
A conservative candidate with a set of balls and the guts to use them.
Fer shur. Surprising coming from McCarthy. Maybe he has been spending too much time with Kathleen Parker at the latest trendy bistro or something. These NRO milquetoasts are starting to get on my nerves...
McCain lost the election last night, Rap.
Interesting, thanks.
Mine, too. Honestly, I can see venting, even ranting, but do it over your beer or at least at a place like FR. Don’t push the “publish” button because you feel the need to whine on a global stage.
So, you’re voting Obama?
"Republican Bad, Democrat Good"
whereas, there is a well-documented timeline of the genesis and development of the mortgage crisis going back to 1977.
These people who want to pin the problem on just one administration, look at just presidents, are partisan and simplistic in their thinking.
Mac half came out with this last night, albeit not as much as some would have liked. Sarah is the main hammer on this - with the thinking that she brings conservatives, and Mac, independents. I believe Mac is doing his best (and succeeding to a degree) to keep independents in the fold, and not just be a partisan cheerleader like his opponent. Will it work? It may - remember that polling data (which shows a tightening in the race now) can be manipulated by sampling to shape opinion and depress the base.
I believe THIS is what they and the press have been trying to do. We cannot let them.
"Let's be honest"
"In reality"
"Everybody knows"
All these (and similar phrases) tell me one thing:
The speaker is trying to sell be a big, stinking load of bullshit.
We’re learning that the Bob’ACLU’Barr and ChuckBalwin sycophancies hold the same values as Democrats ... lying and deceiving are fit campaign methodologies.
The most unspoken topic, and the issue most negatively affecting our Nation: illegal immigration.
Politicians will do nothing, but continue to allow it. The “people” made a pathetic attempt via the Minutemen.
And here we are.
“I’m sure glad I don’t think my country is toast. My country is comprised of citizens who are strong and will fight for what is right when it gets down to brass tacks.”
Let me know how plucky and upbeat you feel when Obama raises your taxes, redistributes your cash, reinstates the Fairness Doctrine, socializes your medicine and shrinks the economy.
I am a hard-core fighter, and I never give up. But I also speak my mutha-f-ing mind. And let me tell you, pal, with a commie wretch like Obama running against a liberal like McCain, yeah, there’s a difference, but it comes down to how fast versus how slow you want the hand to turn up the heat. You still get boiled in the end.
Am I going to vote for McCain. You f-in A, I am. I gave money to his campaign. But what in God’s name do I have right now to be upbeat and optimistic about???!!!
The Congress just socialized the mortgage industry, not with McCain’s approval, but with his INSISTENCE. McCain furthers the decline with his plan for the FedGov to renegotiate loans for deadbeats. Let’s not get into McCain’s policy on cap and trade.
But why just fear McCain, when you have 8 years of liberal borrowing and spending from that nasty hard-right conservative George W. Bush? Bush has expanded government more than any other president since LBJ.
I’m FURIOUS, Allegra! FURIOUS!!! And I am extremely concerned that this election will do NOTHING to alleviate any of the problems— in all likelihood, it will worsen them, big time.
My only hail mary play to hope for is that McCain wins (unlikely at this point), and passes the reigns to Palin, who MIGHT just act like a conservative.
If you think things are going along just swimmingly, I envy you. I just don’t see it.
I’m no Rudyist, but hearing the stream of platitudes last night, nearly indistinguishable between the two supposedly competing candidates, I tried to imagine if Rudy were debating Zero, knocking that fool off his marxist pedestal, hitting him on ACORN and the terrorist connections.
