While the two presidential candidates, Senators John McCain and Barack Obama, prepare for their second debate on Oct. 7 at Belmont University in Nashville, Tom Brokaw gets to sift through questions submitted by you. In addition to queries from a group randomly selected by the Gallup organization, Brokaw will be fielding questions submitted online at mydebates.org, the site created by the Commission on Presidential Debates and Myspace. The focus of the town hall-style debate will be domestic and foreign policy, Brokaw's specialties.
The CPD was established in 1987 to ensure that the debates provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners. Its primary purpose is to sponsor and produce debates for the United States leading presidential and vice presidential candidates and to undertake research and educational activities relating to the debates. The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization sponsored all the general election debates in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.
Civic organizations and state and local government officials have supported Belmont's bid for the presidential debate. Former Nashville mayor Bill Purcell, Tennessee governor Phil Bredesen and senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander, and congressman Jim Cooper all wrote letters in support of Belmont and bringing one of the debates to Tennessee. In his letter to the CPD, Governor Bredesen wrote, The Presidential Debates would find a compatible home at Belmont University where students with inquisitive minds take their roles as future citizens of our community, nation and world very seriously.
Hosting the debate at Belmont will engage our students in the political process through invaluable first-hand participation, Dan McAlexander, Provost at Belmont, said. Belmont takes seriously its mission to prepare its students for success in the real world, and serving as host site for the presidential debate will give our students invaluable tools in critical thinking and practical experience as they take an active role in what will surely be an historical election.

There are basically three ways to get a ticket. First, the Gallup Organization will be selecting up to 150 Middle Tennesseans identified as undecided voters. Those attendees will be the participants in the town hall-style debate, and some will be chosen to ask a question of the candidates.
The bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which hosts the debates, will split the remaining 300 tickets evenly between both campaigns, said Pamela Johnson, Belmont’s debate coordinator. Those tickets have not trickled down to the state party offices.
The fact that there are idiots that need this debate on 10/7 to make up their minds is . . .
Chris Wallace just spoke to a McCain debate prepper and he suggests that McCain won’t go after Obama too hard. Nothing like Ayers, Wrights, etc... WTF is he thinking?

Second Presidential Debate at Belmont University in Nashville TN
Tonight McCain needs to be focused like a laser beam and hit Obama on his liberal ideology. Specifically, attack on key policy issues -— Obama’s promise to raise taxes that would hurt small businesses; Obama’s promises to add a trillion dollars in new spending, that would increase the size and scope of the federal bureaucracy; and expose Obama for being weak on military matters and national defense. This is what McCain has been dealing with for the last 20 years in the Senate and its what he knows best.
Comments 214, 476, 722, 1304, 1687, and 1907 will probably say it best. Comment 104 needs to be removed by a moderator.
(I’m going to miss the debate in lieu of my six-year-old’s Cub Scout meeting.)

I suggest McCain begin the debate with a right hook(Ayres) followed by a left upper cut to the glass jaw of 0bama(Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae) in the first round.
At least six million questions have been submitted via the Internet to be asked at the town-hall-style presidential debate Tuesday in Nashville between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. That’s a lot of queries for 90 minutes, and obviously they won’t all get asked — there will be time for only 15 to 20.
The moderator, Tom Brokaw of NBC News, is sifting through those millions of questions to find six or seven that he might pose. The other dozen or so questions will come from among an audience of about 80 likely voters from the Nashville area who will be on stage with the candidates.
Mr. Brokaw will meet with audience members on Tuesday as he seeks a balance between foreign and domestic topics.
The live audience was selected over the last week by the Gallup Organization, which made thousands of calls to find people who are truly uncommitted — that is, they may be leaning toward one candidate or the other but could still change their minds.
“Only a small percentage of the population qualifies as uncommitted,” said Frank Newport, editor in chief of the Gallup Poll.
The format allows about five minutes for each question: two minutes for each candidate and one minute for what the co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates, Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr., described as “interplay” to be managed by Mr. Brokaw.
