There were intense expectations built up before the vice presidental debate last Thursday between Jospeh Biden and Sarah Palin. Rumors of all kinds flew across the Internet in advance of the event. The media produced scores of articles, interviews and information that speculated on what strategy each side would use. Continues...
================================================================
Gaffe-ing out loud
Our Sarah so thoroughly thrashed Sen. Hair plugs in the debate that the media called it a tie. A CNN headline read: For Palin, a tie is a win. Or, for CNN, a Palin win is a tie.
The poor dears in the media were so discombobulated by Biden getting routed that for hours after the debate, even in the face of the manifestly obvious, the media kept insisting that Biden had won. But too many people (70 million) saw Biden losing the debate for themselves, so Pravda West resolved to falsely calling it a "tie". Yes, Palin 'tied' Biden up with a rope and gave him a good arse-whipping, so they're even!
And the gaffe machine kept on gaffing. In the debate, Biden said the vice president's sole role is to back the president's policies and insisted the only time the veep presides over the Senate is "when in fact there's a tie vote. The Constitution is explicit." He even noted that FDR himself mentioned this during a televised address in 1929.
The problem with this is that Biden is a moron. The vice president is president of the Senate at all times. The Constitution is explicit. "The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate . . . "
As the Washington Times notes, "early vice presidents, such as Thomas Jefferson, actively exercised that role, the vice president still keeps offices at the Capitol, and scholars say it wasn't until the middle of the 20th century that the vice president had an office at the executive office building." In fairness, Biden is not a Thomas Jefferson historian, he's an FDR historian. (Biden: Stand up, FDR! Stand up! Let the people see you!)
There were so many gaffes by Biden during the debate, no wonder the media thought he'd won. Here are just a few more:
-- "Look, all you have to do is go down Union Street with me in Wilmington or go to Katie's Restaurant . . . and ask anybody in there whether or not the economic or foreign policy of this administration has made them better off in the last eight years," Biden said. Katie's Restaurant closed in the 1980s. And it wasn't on Union Street. I think there's a 7-Eleven there now, run by an "articulate and bright and clean" black guy.
-- "We've spent less in Afghanistan in seven years than we spend in a month in Iraq," Biden said. According to the Congressional Research Service, we've spent $172 billion in Afghanistan since 2001; in Iraq, we're spending $10 billion a month. Biden's math was off by around 2000 percent.
-- "When we kicked -- along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon, I said, and Barack said, 'Move NATO forces in there . . .'" -- Biden. Hezbollah was not kicked out of Lebanon. Hezbollah is still in Lebanon, with headquarters in a Home Depot right next to Katie's Restaurant.
Always fulfilling the role of being objective, the media swiftly defended Biden, claiming he meant Syria, not Hezbollah. But we didn't kick Syria out of Lebanon either. The Lebanese did.
-- "With regard to arms control and weapons, nuclear weapons require a nuclear arms control regime. John McCain voted against a Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty that every Republican has supported" -- Biden. In fact, 49 other Senate Republicans joined McCain in voting against the CTBT in October of '99. Four Republicans -- James Jeffords, Gordon Smith, Arlen Specter and John Chafee -- voted for it. This is what Biden meant by "every Republican".
-- Biden claimed in the debate that Obama never said he'd sit down with Ahmedinijad unconditionally, apparently forgetting his attack on Obama last year at the National Press Club: "Would I make a blanket commitment to meet unconditionally with the leaders of each of those countries within the first year I was elected president [as Obama has proposed doing]? Absolutely positively no!"
-- "John McCain voted to cut off funding the troops. Let me say that again. John McCain voted against an amendment containing $1 billion, $600 million that I had gotten to get MRAPs (Mine Resistant Armor Protected) . . . he voted against it," Biden said in the debate. In fact, his amendment passed by a vote of 98-0. McCain was one of the 98.
. The pundits had asserted weeks ago that Palin wasn't ready to be president because of highly-edited TV interviews. Instead, whether it's ripping off speeches or hanging around restaurants that haven't existed for 20 years, it's Joe Biden who isn't ready. If his debate goal was to leap past Hussein on the list of 'Least-Ready-to-be-President', he came tantalizingly close.
As for how the media scores it, you know a debate wasn't a 'tie' if you see one camp completely thrown off-message, having to defend this or that gaffe (Obama-Biden), while the other camp goes on offense (McCain-Palin), with our Sarah hitting Obama on his shady associations -- other than Biden, that is. With Biden having wedged his foot far down his throat before 70 million viewers, the debate swung the campaign narrative from banks and Wall Street back to Obama -- specifically, whether his palling around with chums Tony Rezko and William Ayers says anything about his 'superior' judgment. It's his real soft underbelly since, beyond the fake Greek columns and 'Hope-and-Change' speeches, people don't really know much about the Teleprompter Jesus. The Obamatrons fear that's a debate they can't win. And, for once, they're right.
Anyway, that's...
My Two Cents...

Have a great Sunday, y’all!
God Bless Palin! Thanks
Loved this “two cents!”

If this is real (and it certainly looks it) its dynamite and well worth spreading around.
That’s a bad PBS link...
You get the following:
Whoops — the link you followed is not correct. Please go to PBS.org to find the correct link.

Yep, good ol’ Joe, always spendin’ his time hangin’ around family resturaunts. When he’s not there, he’s in Home Depot, talkin’ to the folks an’ buyin’ a kitchen table. Quite a guy.
This is excellent, JH2. It’s might be the best you’ve ever put together.
Beyond that, it’s dead on target.
If winning a debate = spewing false facts and questionable stories with a straight face, then Joe Biden won.
The media would have been all over Palin if she’d done this.
Wonderful essay! Thanks for posting it.
Enjoyed your 2 cents. Reflects my own feelings. Still, Palin has been reeled in. She’s more Republican now than the woman who lit our fire at the convention.
Got an error message on link. It appears to be at this address now:
Is Sarah Palin qualified to be Vice President?

LOL! Spewed coffee all over my keyboard.
Excellent dissection of the media’s post-debate cr@p.
I'm not old enough to remember, but I don't think television was around in 1929.
Good one. Thank you.
Excellent!
Nice writing!
