The Ann Arbor News ^ | October 3, 2008 | Susan Oppat

An hour before Bruce Springsteen tickets were to be distributed for Monday's free acoustic concert at Eastern Michigan University, only 20 people were in line.

The first fan arrived from Grand Rapids at 4:30 a.m. Friday. Brad Berry, 54, has seen Springsteen about 15 times and saw Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama in May in Grand Rapids. He said he was alone until 6:30 when a second person showed up. And they were alone until 7:30.

All said they were shocked that so few people were in line.

Maybe young people aren’t so stupid OR they’re not interested in an old fossil like Springsteen. He must be near 60 years old!

He was old when I was in high school 20 yrs ago.

I wouldn't expect long lines for a 30-min acoustic set. Just those "I've seen Broooce 15 times" types. Plus, you're going to get nagged to do things for BO. Not worth it.

Oldies guys like Springsteen usually need to get a bunch of other oldsters to tour with them. It can be pretty cool for us other old-timers to go see Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Blue Cheer, The Boxtops, Foghat, etc., do their greatest hits. A lot of people enjoy those retro concerts but nobody would go to see just one of those bands.

Maybe Springsteen should try to get a spot with Ringo Starr’s All Star Band. Or at least try to find some other rockers who were big 35 years ago and who would join him on tour. Maybe The Captain and Tennille would join him! Why not? Make a few bucks, have some fun....

Grandpa Jones on his worst day was better than Springsteen on his best.

Brucie probably thought he was going to have a crowd of 30,000 or something along those lines to listen to him shill for 0bama.

Sucks to be Brucie, I guess.

Me nither. I never liked his music, and now I don't like his politics.

What amazes me is that FReepers insist on referring to him as "The Boss." Why they show respect for a no-talent, left wing hippie is beyond me.

Exactly.
I saw Springsteen in 1974 when I was in college (and before he was known outside the Philly/NJ metro area). It was a great concert. But I imagine college kids look at Bruce Springsteen today the way I looked at Frank Sinatra back then.

PLEASE, do NOT mistake the size of the crowds for how the vote will go down.

I recall oh so well how Pres Buss drew HUGE crowds, and how Algore's crowds were so small.

Do you all recall how THAT election turned out?

Because of cheating, one of the closest in our history..

The whole New Jersey music thing - Springsteen, Bon Jovi, The Jonas Brothers - I never got it.

Ah, but Ted Nugent was part of the NJ music thing. He played guitar for the “Amboy Dukes” back in the 60s.

But at least Ted has talent.

On the other hand, Bruce Brainstrain has always stunk. His music is pretentious and he always looks so self-important.

Meanwhile, a Miley Cyrus concert will have lines stretched around the block.
