Obama and ’60s Bomber: A Look Into Crossed Paths (Obama Has Met Ayers, but the Two Are Not Close)
nyt ^ | 10/3/08 | SCOTT SHANE

Posted on 10/03/2008 5:46:20 PM PDT by mathprof

At a tumultuous meeting of anti-Vietnam War militants at the Chicago Coliseum in 1969, Bill Ayers helped found the radical Weathermen, launching a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and United States Capitol.

Twenty-six years later, at a lunchtime meeting about school reform in a Chicago skyscraper, Obama met Mr. Ayers, by then an education professor. Their paths have crossed sporadically since then, at a coffee Ayers hosted for Obama’s first run for office, on the schools project and a charitable board, and in casual encounters as Hyde Park neighbors.

Their relationship has become a touchstone for Obama’s opponents. Video clips on YouTube, including a new ad that aired Friday, juxtapose Obama’s face with the young Mr. Ayers or grainy shots of the bombings. In a televised interview last spring, Senator John McCain, his Republican rival, asked: “How can you countenance someone who was engaged in bombings that could have or did kill innocent people?”

More recently, conservative critics who accuse Mr. Obama of a stealth radical agenda have asserted that he has misleadingly minimized his relationship with Mr. Ayers, whom the candidate has dismissed as “a guy who lives in my neighborhood” and “somebody who worked on education issues in Chicago that I know.”

A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63. But the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called “somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.”.

Obama campaign aides said the Ayers relationship had been greatly exaggerated by opponents to smear the candidate

-—Most of the bombs blamed on the Weathermen were placed to do only property damage, a fact Mr. Ayers emphasizes in his memoir——

Guys lay off...he’s the good natured bomber!

“If McCain doesn’t hammer this one with both barrels, he deserves to lose, (and bad)!”

Agreed. McCain has been ruuning one of the most candy-a$$ed campaigns I’ve ever seen.

This is their pre-emptive piece on Ayers. In a sense, it’s good for McCain since it may backfire for them. It only makes more people ask, “Who is Ayers?”

Whew!!! For a while I was under the assumption the Barry O and William Ayers were good buddies, thankfully the New York Slimes have cleared up this obvious falsehood for me. LOL

Believe it or not, this is good stuff. The fact that the New Yorks slimes are even acknowledging the existence of Ayers is a good thing for McCain... The right wing blogs are starting to take effect and their message is getting through.

I thought they would never admit that Ayers even existed. Now they’re actually being forced to defend Barry O with stories that even mention the names of his flaky associates.

If McCain had launched his political career at the home of an unrepentant abortion clinic bomber, was on a board with the bomber, got a position on a foundation from the bomber, and described the bomber as a “friend,” NYT would have been hammering McC on their front page every day for the last 4 months.

If McC had spent 20 years at a white racist, anti-Semitic Ayrian Nation (neo-Nazi) church, used one of the racist minister’s sermons as a book title, defended the racist minister by claiming critics were “caricaturing” him, and described the minister there as his spiritual mentor and friend, NYT would have been hammering McC on their front page every day for the last 4 months.

I suppose the NYT decided they had mention the fact that these 2 knew each other. But after looking in to it, it is no big deal. What would you expect from this left wing rag.

It’s a good sign also that the Palin-bin biden debate has been largely ignored/buried on their internet site. Even the staggering neilsen numbers didn’t give the story legs.

Summing up the summit - It was a plus for Gorbachev and mixed success for Reagan
Chicago Sun-Times - June 5, 1988
Author: Scott Shane; Karen Hosler

The golden cupolas of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower and the Cathedral of the Assumption glittered in the sun and President Reagan said, “Really wonderful, a great sight,” according to the Soviet newspaper Pravda.

“The whole Kremlin complex is like this, replied Mikhail S. Gorbachev. “It brings to mind Pushkin.”

It was a potent symbol. Here was a lifelong anti-communist American president strolling on a sightseeing tour of the Kremlin complex, the heart of the Soviet empire, with the leader of the Soviet Communist Party.

And summits are mostly symbolism, the hard negotiating usually having taken place in advance. So in the long run, that image of superpower dialogue may prove the most enduring legacy of the Moscow summit. The mere fact that it happened made the summit a success.

Shane seems to have written for the Chicago Sun Times in thee 90’s. If he doesn’t know Obama, I’d be willing to be he knows Ayres.
