WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush on Friday signed a mammoth economic rescue package aimed at saving troubled US banks and easing a credit crunch that he warned could spell disaster for the US public.

After campaigning for the bailout for two weeks and courting reluctant lawmakers in person and by telephone, Bush signed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 before leaving Washington for the weekend.

I see BDS is alive and well.

I'll put up my conservative credentials - complete with ACTIONS - against yours any day of the week.

Deal?

BTW...I (and my family) voted for Bush twice.

You’re absolutely right. Bush is an incredible president and this bill is yet another in a long line of his terrific accomplishments where he has put the interests of Americans first. Bush today gave us yet another reason why Washington DC should be renamed Bushville. Next stop: Mount Rushmore.
/so much sarcasm my head is going to explode

He is a total failure and can’t get out of the White House fast enough. Same thing goes for 95% of all members of the Senate and House.

Am I correct in observing that the senate inserted spending amendments to a bill that the house just voted on?Isn’t it the job of the house to ‘initiate’ spending/taxes, not to ‘concur’ with the deliberative body?

And to think that I voted for the man twice and contributed generously to his election(s). Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

This is one of the few good things W has done in the economic arena.

I am thoroughly ashamed of my government. A strong message has been given that corruption pays. All right, if that's the way it is now played I can't blame any citizen who does whatever they can to avoid paying taxes into this corrupt system. I am seriously going to look into how I can have a higher portion of my income in cash transactions. I don't like it, but I'm not going to be a fool and let the corrupt steal my money without doing everything I can to prevent it.

And seriously, I don't give a damn if Al Franken is my Senator instead of Norm Coleman. I'm feeling pretty much that way about Obama and McCain too.

Remember when Barak said he represented change? This is his change, to saddle the middle class with his bailouts for his corporate friends

Market down over 1%.

Closing in on 2% across the board!

Yeah, that sure worked out WELL, didn't it!!??

Everyone's SO HAPPY about the bill, they're all bailing out of the market, emptying our wallets even before they have a chance to make us pay for all the CRAP they just passed!

NICE!!

BDS is not the same how people who understand what the left has won today and that Bush gave it to them without a fight.

Perhaps you favor this bill and the socialist takeover, but some here do not.

Hi, I'm Troy McClure, you might remember from such films as "The Bailout of 2008" or the sequel "The Collapse of America"

Please point out the relevant text in the Constitution that supports your opinion.

Please point out the relevant portion of the Constitution that authorizes Congress to bailout private companies. There is a list of enumerated powers in Article 1, Section 8, but I don't see the power to bailout private companies listed there.

Maybe I'm not reading the right Constitution. Perhaps you were referring to the USSR's Constitution.

watch the dollar. it will soon be worth less than the peso.

Agreed. Considering we're spending $700+B (more) of which we don't have and must either borrow and/or print more of the value of the dollar can ONLY go down. Adding that much funny money to the budget can only drag down further the U.S. dollar. What will actually go up though is our cost for goods. This is simple economics 101.

The first time I read that book I enjoyed it, although thought that the premise was really pretty far fetched. Now it is as if every single event in it is a direct parallel to what is actually happening today. Scary stuff.

We have just passed the point of no return. Either this bailout will work or this nation will completely collapse. Very little middle ground here.

“..the sum total of the senate/congress IQs is a very small number.”

It’s not their IQs you should worry about — it is their evil intent that should make you pause.
