All new waves of immigrants were treated like crap by the older waves.
Though I'm sure the Italians were virtuous to a man when the next wave of ethnically different immigrants arrived in their wake fighting for the same jobs... :-)
BTW, the city I come from had a huge Italian population, and I've always had a great affection for Italians (some of my best relatives are half of each).
Irish were nasty to Italians who were nasty to the Puerto Ricans and southern blacks, who are nasty to the Mexicans and Arabs, etc...(singing) oh the circle won’t be broken. ;-)
