I haven’t been there in 6 years. Why anyone votes for reid i don’t know?
She has family that decended from W. Wisconsin.
But, it sure sounds like us here in Minnesota.
“Linguists call this code-switching.”
Like Obama, except his “folksy” accent is purely fake. He never grew up anywhere that they spoke the way he does when stumping in flyover country. Dennis Prager made a point of playing him saying “policy” with O’Reilly, and “puhl-uh-say” the next day in the midwest.
I'd say the same about any Democrat Senator, including the 2 from my state. What ever people see in them, I just do not know.
>> Some have even attributed her manner of speaking to her supposed stupidity.
‘supposed stupidity’
Is that a backhanded bitch-slap, Jesse?

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop." |

The eight wonder of the world: who votes for, kennedy, reid, boxer, feinstein, frank, dodd......
Is anyone on this forum capable of switching accents or manner of speaking? I mean in a convincing fashion, say from Upper Crust Wasp to Inner City Eubonics to Tough Guy - Organized Crime?/Just Asking - seoul62.........
And those are the ones that we hear most often. Think about the ones that they keep hidden from view. lol
I grew up in Cleveland and have lived in Illinois for 20 years and I thought she sounded Midwestern.
It's not pop, it's soda. It's pop "up north" & to my west, but here it's soda. Easiest way to find out where I come from is "bubbler". Some in Rhode Island & southern Massachusetts also use the word bubbler, but the word originated in my neck of the woods. Someone with a good ear won't ask me if I'm from Wisconsin. They'll ask if I'm from Milwaukee.
Great article!

Can you tell me the difference between Lace Curtain and Shanty ?
Everybody thinks they are a Non-Accent Bunch.
Now, Baltimore is an entirely different story.
I had the same thought, especially when she says "TAAAAWD". It's a cute accent and fits her bubbly personality, and it's definitely more Upper Western Great Lakes than anything else.
The whatever is the ability to get her point across clearly at light-speed. If you never had the opportunity to witness two or more Yooper women visiting, you have never seen the true art of getting a word in edgewise and not wasting the moment.
When you listen to her talk, you might think that she served as a police chief in Fargo under the alias of Marge Gunderson. The murderous crooks in the Beltway better not underestimate her
"I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper. ...And those three people in Brainerd. ...And for what? For a little bit of money. There's more to life than money, you know. Don't you know that?... And here ya are, and it's a beautiful day..."
