US food group Heinz says it has decided to stop buying Chinese milk for use in its products in the wake of a giant tainted milk scandal that has left 53,000 children ill.
"In order to reassure consumers about the safety of Heinz products, Heinz has made the strategic decision to switch our milk supply in China and Hong Kong to non-Chinese sources and we are testing all dairy ingredients for melamine prior to use in our factories," a spokesman for the company said.
China has launched a probe following the discovery of melamine added to milk apparently to make watered-down milk appear richer in protein.
Four babies have died in mainland China after drinking milk containing melamine, while another 53,000 have been sickened, many with kidney stones and related problems.

Ping!
And it took how long for them to decide this was the right course of action?
ONG! Good thing I don’t buy anything related to that name.
OMG, kidney stone related deaths in the U.S., thanks to Mrs Heinz
Looks like Heinz is right on top of this.... /s
As a worldwide company, I imagine that it would take a bit of time to determine the size and scope of the problem. That’s taking into account product shipped, product in production and deliveries in transit.
Personally, I’d rather they issue a statement that is actionable rather some feel-good blather like you would get from places like Capitol Hill.
If she was smart she would keep buying it and try to get her vietnam vet husband to drink as much as possible....
badump...
Thank you, thank you.
I’ll be here all week.
Ah, the downside to outsourcing American jobs in order to make big bucks exploiting slave labor in unregulated backwater parts of the world. Poor, Heinz, it is so unfair. /s
For the record, Te-REH-sa Heinz is but a minority stockholder in the company that bears her late husband’s name. She has no role in running the company.
why were they buying it to start with?? China has a poor reputation for supplying quality food products.
China Industries International
their new corporate logo...
In years gone by Heinz was more interested in a quality product than poor and cheap
Amazing they ever DID use it.
Amazing too that they admitted it.
What are they buying now.....Mexican Human Breast Milk?
I know. I still wouldn’t buy anything with that name on it. It helps her and her
irrelevant husband.
