Those of us on the outside will follow every twist; it is a statement of the obvious that the entire world will be watching on November 4. But perhaps we shouldn't be. At least if my email inbox is anything to go by, we should have only the scantest interest in the ongoing US election. After all, it's got nothing to do with us.
Or, as one emailer put it: "We are electing the President of the United States and the world can choke on it." His was one of a deluge of mainly hostile responses to a column that appeared here three weeks ago, arguing that the world's verdict would be harsh if Americans chose McCain over Obama...

I think the pansy ass email was from a freeper.
That ignorant limey needs to bugger off.
I suspect he’s got plenty of ability.
We took our liberty from you 225 or so years ago and we’re not giving it back.
The Guardian is so obsessively anti-American that (ironically) half their content is something about the US.
On the other hand, the London Telegraph is more pro-American than Fox, and often cover stories about the US you don’t get here.
Liberal without borders -
Destroying the west one country at a time.
If we cared what those dentition impaired people thought we would still be a colony and maybe even have our own sharia court like they do!
Johnny, you don’t have to live under the domestic policies of Obama. Go home.
The paper for lefties whose vocabulary is stretched by four letter words is the Daily Mirror.
Why don’t you people get rid of the queen. Such a stupid idea and a waste of money.
What England needs is a ruthless King who will storm Parliament and hang the traitors. Getting rid of the Her Majesty the Queen, would not help that.
The Queen, in all earnestness, should abdicate to her youngest grandson. You want to see Muslim shiite fly from England? Give the crown to an ambitious young prince.
England needs BNP.
Would that our media would simply unashamedly admit its bias. Then we could have liberal media and conservative media, like Europe, and be done with the pretense of “objective” journalism.
“We are electing the President of the United States and the world can choke on it.”
A Freeper maybe? ;^)

"You have sate here too long for any good you have done. In God's name, go!"
“I think the pansy ass email was from a freeper.”
Holy sh*t!
I called him that, in a comment on the Guardian’s web site!
Wow. So this is what the 5 minutes of fame feels like....
I was hoping for so much more. Oh well.
LOL. It’s all downhill after your 15 minutes too.

What "unilateral" war? If it were unilateral then what's he doing complaining about participating in it?
I haven't a clue what Freedland means by a "moral" lead on climate change. If he means turning over national policy to a bunch of self-appointed "experts" who are more interested in economic control than the weather, then no thanks. If he means actual effort to reduce, say, CO2 emissions, then the U.S. is providing leadership in the fact that we have reduced them and Europe has not.
Clearly, then, Freedland desires the sort of morality that relates to the mouthing of internationalist pieties and not the sort relating to actual achievement. In Obama he'll get that in full measure. But far from having enough of the last eight years of Republican realism, we've had quite enough of "the world can go to hell as long as our intentions are sound." More than enough.
It is a bit amusing to see that Freedland regards the credit crunch as being "made in America." On the contrary, it was made at every level by investors out for a quick, risky buck. If I lose money speculating in Dutch tulip bulbs it's a bit of a stretch to blame the Dutch for it.
