“The BATF should be disolved, at the very least its management forbidden to work in law enforcement in the future.”
I’d be satisfied if they confined their activities to their constitutional jurisdiction. Let them tax and enforce gun laws at the borders and on federal property.

I think your response was logical. It’s just that when an agency loses it’s way this badly, I don’t buy into the idea it can restrain itself in the future. The mindset is so screwed up, I honestly don’t want these folks anywhere near law enforcement again.

Abolish the ATF would mean Janet Reno would have to remove those pictures of Elian Gonzales's "rescue" from her wall of fame and the "liberation" of the Branch Divides next to them.Shoot, if that's all that's standing in the way, I'd be more than happy to stipulate that she can keep them. Don't forget, too, that Waco was an FBI operation too, so those photos probably aren't in jeopardy anyway.

I always thought that ATF stood for automatic transmission fluid.Well, that's the useful ATF.

. The paperwork requirements were minimal, inspections were non-intrusive and it was a useful way for law enforcement to get a handle on guns so as to trace ones used in crimes back to their owners. Actually to the last legal owners, and often merely the last person to buy it from a federally licensed dealer, who in many cases might also be the only legal owner.

BATF had nothing do with the Gonzales snatching. That was INS agents. The BATF did conduct the initial "Showtime" raid on the Davidians, but it was the FBI who conducted the siege and "Final Assault" on their "compound".

I was thinking that about the Gonzales snatching. Just assumed I remembered wrong.

Quit trying to find "Public Enemy Number One" behind every gunshop sales counter.*THIS* is the real reason that batfe is the way it is. Illegal booze, and illegal smokes? Then you're dealing with *real* criminals, who are apt to shoot at you. Law abiding gun/gunshop owners, on the other hand, until recently have not. If the "brave and loyal" agents of the batfe aren't willing to go against moonshiners and mobsters, then its time to disband them...

Quit trying to find "Public Enemy Number One" behind every gunshop sales counter.Remember, the first goal of every bureaucracy is self preservation. If they didn't hassle innocent civilians they would have t risk their lives going after real criminals.

“ATF goes against the Second Amendment.”
Dog bites man. The ATF has been an unprofessional and rogue agency for decades. If and when the ATF ever goes FOR the Second Amendment, it’ll be newsworthy.

Butch Housman sure has guts, you've got to give him that. And a great faith in the Rule of Law, particulary in light of his willingness to confront a rogue agency to whom the law is typically applied only to the serfs.

“Butch, next time try decaf. Sheesh.”
I wonder what brought that on? Personally, I thought he was quite restrained. I've been calling the ATF “traitorous bastards” since about 1971.
