Fort Leavenworth, Kansas is the oldest continuously operating military installation west of the Mississippi River. This historic post, noted for its campus setting, open green spaces and hometown character, is the home of the US Army’s Combined Arms Center (CAC). CAC, as a major subordinate headquarters of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command, has often been referred to as the “ Intellectual Center of the Army”. It is, in many regards, “home base” for the majority of field grade officers across the Army.

Since 1882, CAC and its predecessor organizations have been engaged in the primary mission of preparing the Army and its leaders for war.

Henry Leavenworth (December 10, 1783–July 21, 1834) was an American soldier active in the War of 1812 and early military expeditions against the Plains Indians. He established Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, and also gave his name to Leavenworth, Kansas, Leavenworth County, Kansas, and the Leavenworth Penitentiary.

Colonel Henry Leavenworth, with the officers and men of the 3rd Infantry Regiment from Jefferson Barracks at St. Louis, Missouri, established Fort Leavenworth in 1827 to be a forward base protect the Santa Fe Trail.

For 30 years, Fort Leavenworth was the chief base of operations on the Indian frontier. In 1839, Col. S. W. Kearney marched against the Cherokees with 10 companies of dragoons, the largest U.S. mounted force ever assembled. Throughout the war with Mexico, Fort Leavenworth was the outfitting post for the Army of the West.

Since its founding in 1827, it has significantly evolved and today, as part of Installation Management Command - West Region, the Fort Leavenworth Garrison supports the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) by managing and maintaining the home of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center.

CAC has eleven major subordinate organizations that are staff extensions and provide expertise for the core functions. All are located at Fort Leavenworth:

Battle Command Knowledge System, U.S. Army Information Operations Proponent, Combat Studies Institute, Current Force Integration Directorate, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Combined Arms Center for Training (which includes the Battle Command Training Program and the National Simulations Center), TRADOC Program Integration Office-Battle Command, Center for Army Lessons Learned, Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate, Center for Army Leadership, and Military Review.

Colonel Benjamin Grierson formed the 10th Cavalry on 21 September 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It, along with the 9th Cavalry, 24th and 25th Infantry, formed the first all-black regiments in the Regular United States Army. In western Kansas, the Kiowa encountered the soldiers of the 10th as valiant opponents and termed them the "Buffalo Soldiers."

On December 1, 1888, General Benjamin Grierson, upon relinquishing command of the Tenth Cavalry stated:

"Always in the vanguard of civilization and in contact with the most warlike and savage Indians of the Plains. The officers and men have cheerfully endured many hardships and privations, and in the midst of great dangers steadfastly maintained a most gallant and zealous devotion to duty, and they may well be proud of the record made, and rest assured that the hard work undergone in the accomplishment of such important and valuable service to their country, is well understood and appreciated, and that it cannot fail, sooner or later, to meet with due recognition and reward."

Thank you for the info on Ft. Leavenworth. My grandfather is buried in the cemetery there. He was a Sargent in the Spanish American War and was killed while guarding prisoners at the prison. I never met him since he died in his late thirty's. I must some time soon visit his grave.

30 years later, I’m still using my C&GS coffee cup.

Hey, I still have the C&GS note paper from the book store. We may have been there at the same time....I was in the class of 76.

Thanks for the great post, Lauren.

Pretty good. I was drinking decaf. Somehow, I was a little calmer than usual.

I have off for the Jewish holidays for the next two days.
But not being Jewish, I really have them off.

This Day in U.S. Military History September 30

1938 - Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, French Premier Edouard Daladier, and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain sign the Munich Pact, which seals the fate of Czechoslovakia, virtually handing it over to Germany in the name of peace.

Upon return to Britain, Chamberlain would declare that the meeting had achieved "peace in our time." Although the agreement was to give into Hitler's hands only the Sudentenland, that part of Czechoslovakia where 3 million ethnic Germans lived, it also handed over to the Nazi war machine 66 percent of Czechoslovakia's coal, 70 percent of its iron and steel, and 70 percent of its electrical power. It also left the Czech nation open to complete domination by Germany. In short, the Munich Pact sacrificed the autonomy of Czechoslovakia on the altar of short-term peace-very short term. The terrorized Czech government was eventually forced to surrender the western provinces of Bohemia and Moravia (which became a protectorate of Germany) and finally Slovakia and the Carpathian Ukraine. In each of these partitioned regions, Germany set up puppet, pro-Nazi regimes that served the military and political ends of Adolf Hitler. By the time of the invasion of Poland in September 1939, the nation called "Czechoslovakia" no longer existed.

It was Neville Chamberlain who would be best remembered as the champion of the Munich Pact, having met privately with Hitler at Berchtesgaden, the dictator's mountaintop retreat, before the Munich conference. Chamberlain, convinced that Hitler's territorial demands were not unreasonable (and that Hitler was a "gentleman"), persuaded the French to join him in pressuring Czechoslovakia to submit to the Fuhrer's demands. Upon Hitler's invasion of Poland a year later, Chamberlain was put in the embarrassing situation of announcing that a "state of war" existed between Germany and Britain. By the time Hitler occupied Norway and Denmark, Chamberlain was finished as a credible leader. "Depart, I say, and let us have done with you!" one member of Parliament said to him, quoting Oliver Cromwell. Winston Churchill would succeed him as prime minister soon afterwards.
