WASHINGTON - U.S. regulators warned the public on Friday not to consume seven Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products that were made in China because of concerns they may be contaminated with melamine.
The Food and Drug Administration said the products were recalled by King Car Food Industrial Co Ltd "due to possible contamination with melamine."

First they came for the dog food, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a dog. Then they came for the baby formula, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a baby. And then they came for the coffee, and ... oh, dear god, no

For those also curios: melamine; noun;
1. a white, crystalline, slightly water-soluble solid, C3N3(NH2)3, used chiefly in organic synthesis and in the manufacture of resins, esp. melamine resins.
2. any of the melamine resins.
a deriv. of Melam distillate of ammonium thiocyanate

King Car is a large company here on Taiwan. They were basically the one who found the melamine adulteration in their product ingredients here and reported it to the Taiwan gov't. They have been excellent in tracking the sources of the poison and getting it off the shelfs and out of manufacturers warehouses. They have allowed the labs to be used for testing by anyone and any company that had questions about melamine being in their products.
If its possible, King Car has been a 'white knight' in this episode here on Taiwan.
I do not work for King Car or any of its subsidiaries.

What I don't understand is this: are they purposely putting this stuff into various foods (and if so, for what possible reason other than to poison), or are their manufacturing processes so sloppy that this stuff gets into the food supply by accident? I can't even imagine a reason to put even small amounts of this stuff into a food product on purpose. Are all of these Chinese processing plants used for multiple purposes and they just don't stop to decontaminate before processing foods??
I know the Chinese government doesn't give a rats rear end if people die (not even their own), but in this day and age where the news gets out to the whole world instantly, I can't imagine they would do this on purpose and risk the bad publicity and loss of trade.
But then again, I'm not a heathen Commie with no regard for life, so maybe I just don't "get it".

In the pet foods and now more recently the milk, melamine, even though known to be poisonous, was deliberately added because it makes the product seem to have more protein in it than it actually does. In the case of the milk, it allowed it to be greatly watered down and with the melamine added, made it seem that it wasnt because the protein levels appeared to be normal.
What I dont understand is; what is the motivation? If this was only happening to exported products, then I could see the case being made for deliberate poisoning but the milk and milk products, i.e. the baby formula has sickened thousands of Chinese.
I believe the ChiComs executed someone involved in last years scandal but I dont understand why those involved then and now continue to do put poisonous additives in food products.
Does the ChiCom government put such extreme pressure on these manufactures for production and profitability that they are still willing to take such stupid risks that if caught or found out could result in deaths including their own? Does the ChiCom government know this is going on and turn a blind eye to it and only acts when it becomes public knowledge?
In any case, I think the US should put an immediate embargo on all Chinese goods, especially food and any product that is used in food production.

The “race to the bottom” is bearing bitter fruit indeed.
China needs to have a world wide ban on importation of their food products for about 6 months. Let THEM choke on them.
There was a time when this crap wouldn’t even be tolerated.

Your thinking goes along the same lines as mine. The reality is that we are never likely to know the answer completely (due to the nature of the ChiCom regime.
I agree with you that we should stop importing a lot of Chinese goods, especially food and processed food products.
