-snip-
With respect to his campaign, McCain needs to liberate his running mate from the former Bush aides brought in to handle her aides who seem to have succeeded in importing to the Palin campaign the trademark defensive crouch of the Bush White House. McCain picked Sarah Palin in part because shes a talented politician and communicator. He needs to free her to use her political talents and to communicate in her own voice.
Im told McCain recently expressed unhappiness with his staffs handling of Palin. On Sunday he dispatched his top aides Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis to join Palin in Philadelphia. Theyre supposed to liberate Palin to go on the offensive as a combative conservative in the vice-presidential debate on Thursday.
That debate is important. McCain took a risk in choosing Palin. If she does poorly, it will reflect badly on his judgment. If she does well, it will be a shot in the arm for his campaign.
In the debate, Palin has to dispatch quickly any queries about herself, and confidently assert that of course shes qualified to be vice president. She should spend her time making the case for McCain and, more important, the case against Obama. As one shrewd McCain supporter told me, Every minute she spends not telling the American people something that makes them less well disposed to Obama is a minute wasted.

Take the governor off the Governor! Let her run!
VP debates are unwatched by almost everyone. Certainly unwatched by anyone whose mind is not made up.
We don’t need to concentrate time on events that don’t attract moderate women voters. They are the only ones left who aren’t committed, and they aren’t going to be watching a VP debate.
Palin should have a decent size contingent from her trusted confidantes from her Mayor and Governorship campaigns.
I agree
This makes me happy. They need to stop her from having to repeat the same bs McCain talk about the common good and greed and service. Hit them with real conservative rhetoric. Individual liberty anyone???
I think she should be in any and every interview she can get. she is a commodity right now and the american public wants to see her.
The more she does, the more comfortable she gets, the better she can hone and polish her message.
If she does 10-15 interviews/press conferences between now and the election, her message will get out there and the public will be comfortable with her. The MSM can attack the messenger as much as they want but with a lot of exposure they cannot stop the message.
i don’t understand why bush and cheney will not defend themselves.
LET HER BE HERSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kristol is at least dealing with the reality that many here wish to ignore. McCain’s campaign is on a path towards defeat. The only way they turn it around is to free Palin and for BOTH McCain & Palin to go on the attack. No more bipartisan bullsh*t.
Bill Kristol got this right !...Good advice for Gov. Palin here and by Thursday i hope she’s ready to knock the socks of Biden, and in doing so maybe it will knock the chips off the America hating m/m Obama’s shoulders.
And so what if Joe Biden is the ‘Foreign Policy Expert”?...With experts like that you don’t need court jesters around, with a gaffe here and a gaffe there..But more importantly he has misjudged America and it’s will to win, and insulted the hardworking people of America by wanting to pull out and retreat, rather than stay the course and win...Mrs. Palin knows the right way to win and with her smile and encouragement she can motivate Amricans to get the jobs done and win and in the process give Biden and Obama a black eye and a sore nose...She has the Right Stuff...Biden and OMama put together can’t even come close...
She ought to ask Biden why he chose to run with a Muslim,a commie, a leftist America hating jerk who hangs around with anarchists like Ayers and Dorn and who lines his pockets with monies that should be going to charities, not politicians, then has to gall to say he will Change things...UGH...GO SARAH !
Let Palin debate Obama...she will eviscerate him. She won’t be timid in striking him at appropriate times as McCain was. She needs to debate Obama instead of the one at the next podium next Thursday night... pound again and again how liberal and “out of touch” Obama is with “those of us in the Real America!”
I think she should play to her strengths and attack liberalism completely. Get up a whole volume of it ready to fly out and smash. People may not like her politics, but AMERICANS love a good fighter. They really do, which is why even though McCain’s ‘stunt’ is being called a ‘stunt’, I think America is responding well to it because its someone out there putting up a fight for something. McCain shows up and everything goes completely sideways - and we got a better deal out of it (in theory).
I would like to see Palin come out and say that Biden isn’t qualified for his job because he thinks murdering unborn children is OK. I’d say that I not only question his judgment, but I fear for his soul. He’s a bad Catholic and he’d be a bad VP. Just go for it, double-barrel, and annihilate. The press, Biden, America would be so incredibly stunned at this overt display of feminine conservatism that they’d harp over THAT for weeks instead of her gaffs. It’d be wonderful.
Just let her be her, the country loves that gal.
Personally, I’d like to see her set loose on Kristol.
Well the little weasel found a nugget this time... though I don’t believe a word he says.
What I want to know is the names of the Bush White House advisors who got put on Palin, and why their heads have not been removed at the brain stem level.
Get the Bush kooks the hell out of there if this is true. She can handle it on her own, let her loose!
Gosh, Juan, if you so dammed unhappy with the Boosh treatment....fire their asses.
That’s exactly what I was wondering.
The Bush Administration has been nothing short of a complete and total public relations nightmare. I don’t see how or why anyone running for president would look at the way Bush has let the media basically beat him into a pulp without so much as a whimper, and think that this is exactly the kind of approach that is needed when dealing with someone that most Americans didn’t know until fairly recently.
And I’m right with you. Words cannot express how pissed I have been with the events of the past few days. If I tried to fully express how I truly feel right now I would no doubt be banned.
