GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Sen. John McCain hasn't campaigned in North Carolina since the primary election.
But some people used Sen. Barack Obama's Saturday rally as a chance to show their support for the Republican nominee.
Their numbers didn't compare with those who turned out to support Obama, but the Republicans' enthusiasm for McCain was just as strong.
No official date has been set for McCain to visit the Tar Heel State, but he did recently increase the number of paid campaign staff in North Carolina from about 20 to about 30. That's an effort to defend a state that hasn't voted for a Democratic president in three decades.
The Republican hasn't come to North Carolina since he stumped on the Wake Forest campus in Winston-Salem on primary day. But some people said now isn't the time for a visit anyway.
"He's not in North Carolina because there's a bigger issue going on in Washington right now," supporter Amanda Meister said.
She was referring to the financial bailout that lawmakers are considering, and she said she thinks the Democratic nominee should be more involved.
"With the economy, you know, really, I think Obama should be up there," Meister said. "He says he's a leader on the Senate floor. If he's such a leader, he needs to be up there."
For you FReepers out there insisting Obama is leading in North Carolina, read the above again. Polls are only a small part of the equation.

Whatever the supporters did isn’t spelled out in the article, but it probably wasn’t something that would have much of an impact.
Something that would be extremely effective would be if those supporters tried to ask BHO a question during one of his Q&A sessions. A good question that trips him up and which is then available on Youtube would be extraordinarily effective. Too bad I’m about the only person who’s figured that out.
Obama would never let anyone but the chosen near him. The brown shirts would beat you if you tried.
Why bother to vote then? If anyone is worried about that, then it’s too late. And, if you aren’t willing to take a beating in support of a civic right, let me suggest keeping it to yourself.
BTW, someone was able to ask bho a question and didn’t get a beating:

I tried to ask him a question but he didn’t take any; I was never afraid of taking a beating:

I didn’t take a beating here:

“let me suggest keeping it to yourself.”
Excuse me?? How insulting I was joking. And I certainly will vote as well as exercise my 1st Amendment right to free speech. I spent hours in protest in and about Raleigh against Gore in 2000 and the traitor in 2004 although I really don’t think I would want to be in proximity to the Marxist. I do spend my time canvassing for votes and contacting others.
