I’m thinking there’s calls for Dem resignations, such as, I dunno, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd....etc, etc. I’m thinking maybe those being called to resign are allowed to be at the meeting to “defend” themselves.
Might be why the Blackberrys were confiscated but I’ll allow as this might be a stretch.

Just out of curiosity: Do blackberries have the ability to record conversations in the room? If so, that might be another reason.
I’ve never used a blackberry, so I have no idea.
