John McCain wins the first presidential debate
Kansas City Star ^ | 9/26/2008 | Yael T. Abouhalkah

John McCain exceeded my expectations and narrowly did better than Barack Obama in the first presidential debate Friday night.

...

He was not deferential to Obama, who made the mistake of saying too many times "Sen. McCain is right" about several issues.

I wasn’t going to watch because the thought of Obama posturing on stage made me so mad. But I did, and now I know why Obama refused to take part in town hall meetings with McCain. McCain demolished Obama six ways to Sunday. He took Obama to school on every issue. I could name a dozen moments when he exposed Obama, but here are two: When Obama reiterated that he’d meet with enemy leaders without preconditions. (”What’s the harm, how are you going to get anywhere unless you talk to them?”) McCain pointed out that this gives them legitimacy, as in that Iranian clown’s saying Israel is a stinking corpse. So it gives their disgusting statements legitimacy, (not a good idea).

The other moment, when Obama waxed eloquent and said he’d chase al Qaeda to their hideouts in Pakistan. He’d attack Pakistan. McCain looked stunned, and he said very quickly, You don’t say things like that in public, that you’ll attack an ally. It couldn’t have been clearer that Obama isn’t fit to clean the men’s room, let alone sit in the oval office. I’m sick of the MSM covering Obama’s rear end. It’s no longer fear of being accused of bigotry, it’s become propaganda.

This is shocking. Mr. Abouhalkah is a far-leftist. His columns typically excoriate “McSame” and Palin.

Obama stuttered and sputtered, failed to directly answer a few questions, and failed to acknowledge he was wrong about the surge.

It was also kind of funny to see Jim Lehrer insist that Obama answer the question he asked. Seemed like even the moderator was losing patience with him.

Husband says that Obama is like Nixon in one way--he poses a different question as an answer and answers that. Lehrer didn't let him get away with that this time. Yay for him.

He could have said, “I’m a hip, swingin darkie”, and as a long as he didn’t stutter, Lutz group claims victory.

Oh, did they talk about foreign affairs?..Because right out of the gate, Jim Lehrer asked a question about the economy and that’s where it seemed to stay for at least half or more of the debate..The topic tonight was supposed to be on Foreign Policy, or did Lehrer forget that ?...

Nice when the moderator shows his bias right at the first question...

This has nothing to do with the debate, but does anyone know if Yael T. Abouhalkah is of Sephardic Jewish descent? Yael is a fairly common Jewish name, while Abouhalkah seems like a portmanteau of “abou” (Arabic) and “halakah” (Hebrew).

My motivation, BTW, is pure nosy curiosity.

I would respectfully disagree. I believe it was understood that by both participants going into the first debate that the Wall/Main Street bailout/rescue would transcend foreign policy. This was not an arbitrary decision based on Lehrer’s inherent bias.

Lehrer’s pointed question to both candidates as to what they would NOT be able to accomplish as a result of this market meltdown was brilliant, because even though neither candidate was willing to answer it, the answer was so self-evident and obvious to undecided viewers that it did not require a direct answer - and that is devastating to Obama. With apologies to Rick Pitino, a tax cut for “95% of Americans making less than $250,000” is not going to be walking through that door anytime soon.

That’s strike one.

Next because of McCain’s recent aerial acrobatic manuevers on the Wall/Main Street bailout/rescue, Obama was not able to line up McCain in his sights as “McSame” and was therefore unable to even attempt, much less convince, undecided voters that they “can’t afford four more years of George W. Bush”

Strike two.

Finally, as Obama kept saying “I agree with John”, Senator McCain kept hammering the Illinois Senator about “what he doesn’t understand”. He then emphatically reminded undecided voters that this old comfortable shoe is “ready to be President on Day One without on-the-job training”.

Strike three. Innning over.

I’d say McCain scored a run, and Obama went down 1-2-3. That makes it about a 3-3 ballgame going to the 7th inning, as I see it.

here’s what bugs me everytime I hear this stupid 95% figure.

A huge chunk of americans don’t pay!
I think it’s as high as 40%. DON’T PAY!

How is he going to “cut” for 95% when so many DON’T PAY?

And then he’s going to hit the ones who consistently pay more than their fair share even harder?

How do you get a cut from zero?

And when are republicans going to offer rebuttal to this crap?

That’s the beauty of Lehrer’s question: the GOP doesn’t have to make a rebuttal. It’s about the undecided. They are already skeptical and cynical to begin with. They often vote Democrat, but they aren’t drinking Obama’s Kool Aid, not yet anyway. And McCain rather bluntly stated there isn’t going to be any new spending. By Obama deflecting the question, it’s pretty obvious to the viewers - without a word needing to be spoken - all of Obama’s goodies are not going to be there at the end of the day. No tax cuts, no free college, no handouts, we’re not going to save the planet from global warming, we can’t afford newfangled alternative energy investments. We need cheap oil, and we need it now. That means we gotta go where it is and get it out of the ground and refine it.

So without the goodies, and Obama agreeing with McCain enough to certainly imply he isn’t Bush, tell me again why I shouldn’t vote for the more experienced McCain?

Obama lost the debate.

Brilliant? Hardly. Actually, Lehrer was throwing Obama a softball on that question, which he had answered a few days ago. He essentially gave the same answer last night. Lehrer was trying a "gotcha question" on McCain. It didn't work.

September 22, 2008--Obama: Bailout likely to delay spending programs

"WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says the prospect of a massive government bailout of the financial industry means that he probably would have to delay the spending programs he has called for during his campaign. Obama said he would likely have to phase in those programs, telling NBC's "Today" show in an interview aired Tuesday that the nation's tax revenues would play a role in any budget decisions."
