The Brilliance of McCain's Move
Rasmussen Reports ^ | Friday, September 26, 2008 | Dick Morris

Posted on 09/26/2008 1:55:20 PM PDT by TSchmereL

Dick Morris is predicting that the Democrats will pass the Republican version of the bailout, which most will view more favorably, and McCain "comes out of the process as the hero who made it happen." Dick Morris says "This bold move by McCain is about to work. Big time." I know, I know. It's Dick Morris. But I hope he is right.

“McCain blew it. Last night Newt said no-way there’s a debate tonight and you could see in Newt’s eyes what he was really saying is ‘he’d better not cave and debate.’ Like going to the prom before the dress showed up.”

..............

Well Newt’s not the one that is seeing things turn against him. Thus far, this is NOT helping McCain. His initial plan may have been to skip the debate, but the reality of the momentum turning against him has caused him to change course.

I think it was Mike Tyson that once said: “Everyone has a plan until they get hit”.

I hope he’s right, but I don’t have much respect for the toesucker’s vaunted political acumen. His predictions have been wrong at least as often as right since he became a Fox regular.

“By doing the debate tonight without a deal like he said, gives the impression that McCain’s word is no good.”

IF the “deal” was to be accomplished by himself it would be done by McCain but the power and control is in the dems hands...and if America didn’t understand this before tonight..I have a feeling McCain will make that loud and clear tonight. Whatever happens in a “deal” the Dems will be responsible for the outcome. As for how we got here McCain has to be foreceful on explaining the events that led to this mess and how HE tried to stop it. Obama will go after McCain and how we always wants deregulation but McCain HAS GOT to explain, in layman terms, how the DEMS raped our house market and caused this disaster...and lined their pockets from it. Turn the light and shine it tonight. It isn’t by accident that a deal is to be at 12m...the Dems are daring McCain to say too much or they could hold back a deal...but, by McCain smacking back with the reality of who got us in this and how he worked to stop the slide...and the dems that made money from this....and EARMARKS...can turn all of this argument to McCains favor. He an do it....

God may take sides , but not the side of this bunch of pansies . I have rarely seen so much weeping on this site. Some here are like battered wives , they are so used to being beat up they side with the abuser. Why don't the weepers start their own thread then they can have their wimp circle jerk. No wonder the left wins so often , one nose bleed and they are “ doomed “ . Mac screwed up ! He is behind in the poles ! He should perform falatio on O tonight and apologize for being out of line ! Woe is me !

Sorry, nice try. McCain is going to explain to the American people, over the media's heads, that the Bush/Pelosi/Reid/Obama/Paulson plan is unworkable, will ultimately cost trillions and is destined to fail the taxpayers miserably. He'll carefully explain that he supports the House Repubs’ plan which is more market oriented, keeps government out of the free market, will not straddle taxpayers with an unfathomable amount of debt and has tougher oversight. He'll clearly tie Obama to Bush/Reid/Pelosi/Paulson and ask the question “Now who is for real change and who is for the status quo i.e. more of Bush and more of the same?” If McCain clearly articulates this he wins and his trip to DC will be justified and vindicated. If he does not clearly articulate this he will lose. One other point, I think the last 36 hours have guaranteed one of the largest audiences in presidential debate history.

The worst that can happen is McCain votes against an unpopular plan. The best would be if He influences them to pass a better plan. Either way, he wins.

Barry will either vote for an unpopular plan or not vote at all. Either way he loses.

Not trying anything, just passing on how the media is playing this.
They are and will continue to focus on him saying one thing and doing another about the debate.

He has no choice but to explain it tonight or it is over.

I know 1948 was 60 years ago before TV, but it is amazing what Truman did to win. He had lost congress to the GOP in 1946.

The last two weeks of the campaign, Thomas Dewey was ordered by his advisers to basically hide to avoid any mistakes as internal polling showed he was a solid 10 points ahead of Truman. The Democrats had held the White House since 1932 and were doomed according to Gallup and other pollsters.

Truman told the media the polls were garbage, did a country wide Train tour and crushed Dewey on election day with over 300 electoral votes.

After seeing the bogus exit polling and others in 2004, who is to say the pollsters are any better now?

“By doing the debate tonight without a deal like he said, gives the impression that McCain’s word is no good. And the media is running with it right now.
I have seen 3 reports with that angle in the last hour.
Big mistake!!!”

...no way! Not a mistake! He’s showing that he CAN chew gum and walk at the same time. This debate will be the most viewed in history. It’s exactly what McCain needs right now to make some points about BO’s lack of everything! The “Bullet” will help steer this in the right direction for McCain. He’ll look Presidential, while BO will look like a little boy that lost his Mommy in the mall.

Interesting scenario indeed. I’ve stopped paying attention to the polls. I know Americans will do the right thing, barring voter fraud.

"Does God take sides?"

YES! The Lord said, "You shall know them by their fruit"! The EVIL RATS worship the creation instead of the creator, they worship abortion, instead of the right to life....etc the list is long! SO, YES the Lord takes the side of his faithful servants!

Tatown, 5 minutes in to the debate, the whole drama thing is forgotten. This is a ipod nation, quit glooming.

American’s can’t even remember their spouses Birthday’s, and Wall Street will be forgotten next week.

AND McCain coming up with a new, better bill compared to Bush’s plan proves he’s not Bush Term 3.

You bet. Like the ABC hack who said that no one down at this time in a Prez Campaign has ever won.

Then she retracted when they found out Gore had leads in October 2000.

Not “glooming”, just calling it as I see it and defending McCain’s choice to change his tactic. He had a plan, got hit, and developed a new plan. Do you disagree?

I wouldn’t say it’s over if he doesn’t articulate it well, but it will hurt him badly if he fails to do so. Mac has a plan, and that plan is to say he is for the taxpayers and not for bailing out Wall Street millionaires and billionaires who created most of this mess, that he supports a prudent and careful approach to solving this crisis that will not create a whole new arm of the federal government and that Obama/Reid/Pelosi/Bush/Paulson is just more of the same and that same is failure. It’s all about leadership and experience, I hope he does it. Here is a press release from the McCain camp, read it, it explains exactly where Mac is coming from:

“Statement By McCain Campaign On Negotiations

John McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign was made in the hopes that politics could be set aside to address our economic crisis.

In response, Americans saw a familiar spectacle in Washington. At a moment of crisis that threatened the economic security of American families, Washington played the blame game rather than work together to find a solution that would avert a collapse of financial markets without squandering hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ money to bailout bankers and brokers who bet their fortunes on unsafe lending practices.

Both parties in both houses of Congress and the administration needed to come together to find a solution that would deserve the trust of the American people. And while there were attempts to do that, much of yesterday was spent fighting over who would get the credit for a deal and who would get the blame for failure. There was no deal or offer yesterday that had a majority of support in Congress. There was no deal yesterday that included adequate protections for the taxpayers. It is not enough to cut deals behind closed doors and then try to force it on the rest of Congress — especially when it amounts to thousands of dollars for every American family.

The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain was apparent during the White House meeting yesterday where Barack Obama’s priority was political posturing in his opening monologue defending the package as it stands. John McCain listened to all sides so he could help focus the debate on finding a bipartisan resolution that is in the interest of taxpayers and homeowners. The Democratic interests stood together in opposition to an agreement that would accommodate additional taxpayer protections.

Senator McCain has spent the morning talking to members of the Administration, members of the Senate, and members of the House. He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Representative Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans. The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the Senator will travel to the debate this afternoon. Following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners.”

Morris’s predictions have a nearly flawless record of being wrong. He did predict that the Democrats would take both houses in 2006 but beyond that I cannot think of any other prediction that was right. So this is actually a gloomy prognosis. The rule is to listen to Dick Morris’s prediction then put as much money as you can on the opposite outcome.
