The very latest poll numbers from John Zogby put John McCain squarely ahead of Barack Obama at 46 percent to 44 percent, respectively.
McCain moved from three percentage points behind Obama to two points ahead of the democratic candidate in less than a week. One possible reason for the boost -- McCain's decision to forego politics as usual to focus on the current financial meltdown. The polling was conducted after Mccain's announcement that he would suspend his campaign.
Independent voters played a key role in the latest figures: McCain now leads with independents by nine points, 43 percent to 34 percent.
The survey was conducted on Sept. 23-25, 2008, with 4,752 likely voters and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.

Zogby has a much, much bigger polling sampling than we got with LA Times/Bloomberg and ABC News/WaPo who - when polling from 9/19-9/22 - had polling samples of 838 LV and 780 LV, respectively.
ABC News/WaPo had Obama up by 9 and La Times/Bloomberg had Obama up by 4.
They both seem to have a history of stacking the deck against Republicans in whom they poll and how many, too.
IOW, stick with Zogby, Rasmussen and Gallup.
Gallup's polling from 9/22-9/24 had McCain and Obama tied. Gallup's sample size was 2731 people.
Hey Barack Obozo, how’s that putting the debate over the financial meltdown going? How that putting the debate over doing the work that you are paid to do going?
Obozo, Have you learned to prioritize things yet?
BREAKING MSNBC>>>INDEPENT VOTERS ARE ALL RICH WHITE RACISTS>>>
I don’t get it. Realclearpolitics has obambi moving up everywhere....I give up this is all nonsense.......Rasmussan is even strange.
...And the libmedia was telling us last evening and this morning that McCain was making a huge mistake.
It's funny, because when I first heard about this decision I thought that it was a political stunt and that McCain looked like he was chickening out.
I guess it was a shrewd move (not sure why), but it didn't hit me the right way at all.
The libmedia live in the left-wing echo chamber.
What do they know?
A bunch of circle-jerks.
There’s a comment by Zogby over on AOL News saying that this election could very well turn into a landslide for McCain.
Obama is out there compounding his insistence on having that debate. No deal yet folks. McCain and the House Republicans are going to propose their own plan. We need a reform plan. A blank check is not a plan.
I’m convinced McCain has Sun Tzu working for his campaign these days.
Barry is starting to act and sound like a petulant kid. Meanwhile, McCain is leading the effort. At the same time, it looks like he is not going to sign off on a a bailout.
It's way cheaper to do than any reporting and you can get whatever story you want. It's a scam.
Ultimately they both needed to drop what they were doing and attend these meetings because
- they are both Senators
- one of them IS going to be the next POTUS and it could be either one, so each needs to not be caught like a deer in the headlights
I DO think McCain was using this as a political photo-op and Obama also tried to make it look like McCain was chickening out of the debates. THey are both jerks. They need to put the country first. THe election is still going to happen.
I guess it was a shrewd move (not sure why), but it didn't hit me the right way at all.
I thought he was making this move too late and too close to the time of the debates. As has been proven today, there's work still to do on a deal or partial deal. McCain talks a good game about pork in many bills. Now is his chance to prove it to the voters.
I am firmly convinced that the only question is whether McCain will merely have a substantial win or a blowout win.
Obamayomama is toast!
LLS
and before he forgets the list of questions that have been given to HIM ALONE in advance to study
