McCain decision puts Friday debate in limbo

John McCain's unexpected decision Wednesday afternoon to temporarily halt his campaign has thrown into doubt whether Friday's first presidential debate will go on as scheduled.

McCain said he would stop campaigning and pull all his campaign ads after Thursday's appearance at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. But the idea was treated with a cold shoulder by his opponent, Barack Obama, as well as the nonpartisan debate organizers and the University of Mississippi, where the debate is scheduled to take place.

"I believe we should continue to have the debate. I think it makes sense to present ourselves before the American people to talk about the nature of the problems we're having," Obama told reporters Wednesday afternoon at a hastily called news conference in Florida.

The networks, both broadcast and cable, have been left holding the bag and as of late Wednesday didn't know whether they would be covering a debate Friday night.

"We know as much as you do right now," said one network executive Wednesday afternoon about a half-hour after the news broke.

Postpone the debate a few days. Won’t hurt a thing.

How much you want to bet this is played as McCain being afraid to debate Obama.

I personally am glad he is willing to go do his job, but I would love to see some floor wiping with Obama as the mop.

These debates are useless. The media becomes the gatekeeper and tries to “gotcha” the GOP nominee.

Ever since 1960 Nixon-Kennedy.

McCain should just buy TV time and put on nationally televised TownHall meetings with him and Sarah.

Why give The Empty Suit a platform to pontificate?

There is no law that says there has to be even one debate.

I’m exit82 and I approved this message.

Tell that to the people at the site of the debate. The Univ of Mississppi has spent over $4 million in preparations... the town has been invaded by secret service and media... hotel rooms for 100 miles around are booked. Trust me, it isn't that simple.

Financial Crisis Has Little Sway in Presidential Poll
Race Remains Tied as McCain, Obama Respond to Turmoil

By LAURA MECKLER

WASHINGTON — The race between Barack Obama and John McCain remains a dead heat, despite financial turmoil that has turned the nation’s attention to economic issues that tend to favor the Democratic presidential candidate, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

Obama wants the excuse of campaigning rather that being held accountable for ANY kind of choice.

The debate organizers and TV all lose the prestige and ad revenue of not having this debate, so they have interest involved that have little if anything to do with the well being of our country.

Not to mention that the networks cleared their schedules for this. I think the debate will ultimately go forward.

Number one..if a member of the house or senate runs for President..they should resign from the house or senate. They have duties to perform and can’t do it while running.
Bob Dole resigned...for just that reason.

The first debate is about foreign policy and homeland security...and Obama knows it because he's been studying for weeks!

nonpartisan debate organizers ? I just about fell off my chair! I have no idea why McCain agreed to 4 debates, moderated by 4 liberal Democrats

Its not as if Obama is actually going to do anything while in DC. He won’t vote yes or no. He’ll just vote ‘present’ and call it good.
