Reid to McCain: Don't Come Back to Capitol September 24, 2008 5:14 PM
A Democrat tells ABC News that, in a phone call late this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that it would NOT be helpful for him to come back to Washington, D.C., to work on the Wall Street bailout bill.
McCain this afternoon suspended his campaign and said he would skip the first presidential debate in order to return to Capitol Hill to work on the log-jammed Bush administration legislation, which, as of Wednesday afternoon, was in peril.
McCain had phoned Reid to ask about the prospects of him, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and others to sit down and work together on hammering out a bipartisan proposal.
"Sorry," Reid said to him, a Democrat close to Reid says.
Reid then read McCain the statement he had just put out: "This is a critical time for our country," says the Reid statement. "While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Sen. Obamas suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nations economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.
A source close to Reid said McCain didn't have much to say after that. Reid, the source says, thinks McCain's maneuver is a gimmick born from bad poll numbers and the fact that "debate prep must not be going very well."

UPDATE: McCain senior adviser Mark Salter emails: "Yesterday, Harry Reid said that consensus couldn't be achieved without John McCain's leadership. John stepped up and is providing that leadership. Now Senator Reid seems to have changed his mind for reasons we'll let him explain. But what he should understand is that this isn't about Harry Reid or John McCain or Barack Obama. It's about the American people and, in the words of Warren Buffet, the financial Pearl Harbor they're facing. John's committed to doing his part to help avert that calamity. We hope Senator Reid is too."
I expect that someone will bit^% slap Searchlight Harry anyday now. That noise you hear in the background on that glorious day will be me..
This is f***ing ridiculous. McCain, Obama and Biden all should be in Washington right now. they are Senators and have a job to do. Harry Ried needs to shut the f*** up! This failure is on Bush and the Congress and I blame the Dems far more than Bush. Dodd, Schumer, Frank, Pelosi, Reid were all getting in on the action.
Why doesn’t the rest of the country see this???? Why are they willing to go to the polls in November and elect the most left of left for President and give him a Democrat congress???? I just don’t get it?
“This is f***ing ridiculous. McCain, Obama and Biden all should be in Washington...”
Well, Bush just said he has invited mac and teleprompter Boy to join him in DC tomorrow for meetings. If zero fails to appear he’ll look bad. Real bad.
And in keeping with the subject and spirit of this thread, Reid can go **** himself.
Purrcival to Dingy Harry: Shut up, you old coot! You’re part of the problem.
From your keyboard to God's eyes...
So go ahead and sit this one out or vote 3rd party, and let Obama and a Senate and House majority be elected. Let Obama appoint liberal judges to replace the ones that are fairly certain to either croak or retire during his term. Let them push through their socialist agenda. Let them raise our taxes and push through idiotic environmental legislation beyond what is necessary. This is what happens when you pass up the good because it’s not perfect.
good points.
the dems are good at falsifying reality to meet their immediate needs.
What will Harry say now that the Prez has called them back?
Obie is already trying to squirm out of the debate. For the good of the country, don’t you know.
Let me see if I understand this: Obama is the Messiah, Reid and Pelosi are king and queen of the hill (or queen and king, depending on who gets to wear the tiara that day), and the MSM are their fawning subjects and court jesters - does that about describe it?
THis doesn’t sound at all like what the Founding Fathers envisioned.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, asked what actions Congress can take, said, bluntly, "No one knows what to do. We are in new territory here. This is a different game. We're not here playing soccer, basketball or football, this is a new game and we're going to have to figure out how to do it."
Did he tell Dingy Harry to go f**k himself?
I would’ve.
He only won by what, 126 votes? (Probably democrat ballot stuffing.) Surely Nevada has tough enough customers to handle that situation!
Harry Reid and ABC News.
What a waste of bandwidth.
You know, CottonBall, the "nonthinking" here might have a little more concern for their country and future than a crapshoot scenario.
My neighbor has been saying for a few years that a bunch of “good ole’ boys” need to march to the hill and drag those asshats in congress out to the streets and decorate the lamp posts with them. He’s really been on a tangent about it lately. I always thought him to be a little “off” as he was so extremely graphic when he elaborated on his statements. But now, I’m thinking he has a point...
The Romanians had the right idea in 1989.
My neighbor is a VN vet; retired Master Seargeant, and he really not a loon. He’s a huge history buff, well educated, and a fine principled man. He’s been saying for a couple of years that I may very well see a revolution in my lifetime. Again, he may have a point. Today he was adamant that I would.
