McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Obama contacted McCain FIRST at 8:30 this morning to issue a joint statement.

When this gets out, people will see Obama taking the high ground, and McCain making a slick political move.

Yes, I can see the commercials now....Obama wanted to make a statement on the economic crisis, McCain went to work.

Yep, that really hurts McCain in the squishy middle.

Another point: McCain has gotten inside BO's head and rattled him again.

I prefer to think of it as The Strategy of the Fighter Pilot; Specifically, I think McCain is inside Obama's OODA loop:

Observation; orientation; decision; action. On the face of it, Boyd's loop is a simple reckoning of how human beings make tactical decisions. But it's also an elegant framework for creating competitive advantage. Operating "inside" an adversary's OODA loop -- that is, acting quickly to outthink and outmaneuver rivals -- will, Boyd wrote, "make us appear ambiguous, [and] thereby generate confusion and disorder."

I've long felt that McCain has been treating this as a war; perhaps this is his strategic approach.

Hammered????

He is at 45%, down 2 on the day because of the bogus ABC poll.

McCain was at 32 at the end of the DEM Convention.

10 days ago Obama was at 44%.

Hammered? Give me a break

“Since all eyes are on Washington you might as well be there.”

All eyes who stay reasonably informed on financial matters are on Washington, but that’s a minority of eyes. Most won’t think much about this unless it really does become a crisis.

McCain is only suspending tomorrow morning after some speech. He’s suspending only eight or ten hours before the debate. Why not have the debate, then go back to DC? He might have helped himself more in the debate, and the Country First business sounds a little silly considering the part of a day he’s actually saving.

And the time frame is not as grave as some wish to make it.
Bernanke and Paulson and others need to cool it on the rush and be patient for a few more days. Their “sky is falling strategy” isn’t helping matters.

It’s not exactly a Hail Mary. The package was supposed to be 6 pages long and hammered out by Monday. The rats added a bunch of crap to the bill. The clock is ticking. He’s a member of the Senate and needs to do his job.

The only reason 0bama wanted to issue a statement is the 0bama campaign was afraid that 0bama would end up supporting the bill and McCain opposing it.

.....nope.....

.....the reason nobama wanted a "joint" statement on this was.....

.....to take it out of the debate topics.....

.....(barry's been cramming for the wrong test).....

I don’t think even they dare to do that with the focus of the nation on them and the NOV elections coming up.

Yep. If McCain wasn’t running against a complete moron, this ‘brilliant’ move would be a complete disaster. Even as it stands, Obama has a great opportunity to come out on the right of this bailout, with McCain holding the socialist bag.

It remains to be seen what comes of this. I wonder if they’re preparing Palin for Friday’s debate...

McCain and the GOP have one significant weapon in their arsenal: the filibuster. Even if most of the deal is worked out already, McCain can insist on (1) no pork and (2) no executive compensation golden parachutes.

Many good angles for McCain here.

McCain doesn’t talk (or “hope’), he acts.

McCain should respond along the lines of "Fine. I'll send Sarah Palin."

I think that would be too transparently political and, thus, surrender the high ground.

It’s McCain’s chance to show the American public that he means what he says when he puts “Country First”

What is McCain going to do in the next two days to fix the economy, that the other 90+ Senators, the President, the House of Representatives, and all of the economists on the government payroll can't do?

All McCain is doing is making himself look like the kid who pulls the fire alarm to get out of a test, and he opens himself up to the media saying "if you have the answers, why weren't you working on the economy six months ago when the signs were there?"

Well coming from a great, honest non-biased source like CNN.... Who did they poll? Democrats can spin and you can say what you want negatively, but I would appreciate all of those paid officials there doing their jobs for a change!

Fact is people are calling Congress to demand they don’t do the bailout. Neither of these guys wants to be on record supporting this bailout unless everyone is on board. No one wants to get caught too far ahead of this thing.

Unfortunately for McCain, he overplayed his hand and it will make him look weak. If Obomba sticks to his guns, then McCain is going to need to back down, and that will look bad. Then, on top of that, McCain is likely to screw up when discussing the economy (not a strength for him).

Remember Hillary’s screw up on immigration, then her campaign tanked? This could be McCain immigration moment.

I think Obomba wins these elections because he has horrible competition. He got into the senate by beating Alan Keyes!

MSM already calling it a “Hail Mary” and “showboating”. This is going to be a disaster for McCain.

If you're voting based on what the MSM thinks, you might as well go pull the lever for Barry now.
