McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Oh yes, someone who doesn't agree that McCain walks on water must be a RAT. See if you can find my posts at DU (just a hint: I'm not registered there nor do I plan to).

“I’ll be happy to allow Senator Obama sufficient study time before hand.”

Good one. McCain should tell Obama he would be happy to do a townhall everyday until the election.

“Confirmed: Obama Camp: The Debate Is On (ABC News)”

Stupid move, IMO. Team 0 shouldn’t have commented until after W’s speech.

0bama to go live any minute, (CNN).

I blieve that both Reid and Pelosi said that this was a Rep proposal and that McCain should go on the record as supporting it. The Dems said they would not support the bill unless 51% of the Reps did. McCain is now coming back to take charge. Good move.

Are you serious?

And, if BOH refuses, send the pitbull to debate him. He’ll get creamed!

This is a very interesting idea. Think about it: Mac goes back to WDC and Obama/Biden continue on the stump (probable). Then Mac asks for the debates to be moved and the O/B campaign says no (they are on a Friday so hopefully, nobody will see O get his ass kicked).

So Mac can say "I am busy fixing the econony, but you can debate my VP, if you can't be bothered to help...", which would put O into a terrible position. He can't debate her: it elevates her position, while demeaning both his and Biden's position. He can't NOT debate her also, because he would be portrayed as running from the very person that his campaign has impugned so far.

And, it is a win-win-win, since Obama is a terrible debater, he would likely "lose" the debate (since the conventional wisdom would be that he would "win") with Palin.

There is only upside by painting Obama in this corner.

McCain issues a statement saying that's he's helping to implement the economic fix and that he's confident in the judgment and skills of his vp to participate in a political debate with Obama. I would LOVE to see that!

That would be sweet. Obama would go totally catatonic.

Can you imagine that? If he says "yes" to debating Palin then he ends up diminished no matter how well he does. All Palin has to do is show up and it's a victory.

If he says "no" than it looks like he's afraid to debate her.

The best he can do is not do it and call it a political stunt. But I'm betting a LOT of people would want to see Palin debate Obama rather than McCain. It would be an historic first with a massive audience.

“So then what. O shows up and McCain doesnt. Wonder what the next move will be.”

Obama loses to his own teleprompter....

Should all of our moves be done with an eye to some whacked-out statement from a biased press? Dont demand boldness from a candidate and then piss and moan about what the press is going to say about it.

Take your attitude elsewhere. Giving an assessment of how the media will spin this does not imply we should surrender to it.

This stunt will cost the taxpayers another train ride back and forth from DC to Wilmington (or is it Scranton).

Someone connected to the debate in Mississippi was just on FOX and she was not a happy camper.

Said everything would continue forward.....she sounded really po'd.

Guess she would rather put the debate first....over country :^

-Not that McCain was doing all that well on the campaign
-trail. But he always seems to be one or two steps (days)
-behind what he should be doing.

But he’s always a day ahead of Obama. This is a brilliant move.
