John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Fridays scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen, McCain said.
Yup You may be right! LOL
So, Obama is claiming to have thought of it first BUT doesn’t want to do it?
...and then, if O’bama won’t go along, McCain could send PALIN to debate him instead.
I love that idea.
I disagree. The debate topic was foreign affairs, McCain’s strong suit. McCain has proven he walks the walk. I think he really wants to go back and help fix this mess. He probably hates being away from Washington when there is such a crisis brewing.
CNN, Sanchez: Watch McCain ... how are you reading McCain?
Waiting for word from 0.
CNBC just said 0bama’s going to meet with McCain and Bush on Capitol Hill to hammer out a bill.
Obama team is already spinning it trying to claim it to be their idea.
“McCain the statesman. This will go over quite well. Very Presidential.”
Yep, and the best thing Cons and Repubs and FReepers can do here is support his decision 100% instead of being cynical.
Take a lesson from the Dhims, who back every freakin’ lie Hussein and Biden regurgitate.
Back your candidate on this!
100%!
“This smacks of a desperation move at this late stage. “
It does have that feel doesn’t it. McCain is down right now. He needs to have a win in the debates. I don’t see how pushing this one back or canceling it altogether helps him.
Not to diminish the hostage situation but there is no comparison.
The economic situation has quickly become a global issue and has the potential of taking the US right into a major depression, the likes of 1929. Look at the effects on the British, Japanese and Russian stock market.
Carter’s decision to suspend his campaign ultimately failed because he failed to act. In reality he did little to stand up to Iran or to get our hostages back.
CNN-Sanchez: Is McCain grandstanding?
But, I don't expect Obama to suspend the debate. He'll continue with the campaign. Like all good communists, he'll do whatever it takes to win.
McCain comes back at him by renewing his offer to go to 10 townhall meetings and debates him there. When Obama refuses then place card board cutouts of Obama at the townhall meetings.
I have a sneaking suspicion that McCain knows what is in Bush’s speech tonight. I am no fan of McCain, but this is a brilliant bold stroke. It shows who the leader is and who the follower is.
GIVE ‘EM HELL! (In my mind I see thousands of freepers lining this capitol halls.)
From my rudimentary understanding of the laws of physics, yes.
McCain just flanked Obama with this move. Ol’ Mac is tricky that way. I like that.
If Obama stays on the campaign trail, he obviously does not put his country first. If he joins in, it’s an admission it’s a good idea to actually do the job he’s been hired to do, so he’s agreeing with McCain. Brilliant.
So true...SNL making news...when we have serious problems. nice statement.
No, she can’t. That would make it an obvious attempt to take advantage of the crisis to game the system, and sink McCain’s credibility.
No doubt Rove advised this. The McCain momentum is slipping and this is a calculated “time out.”
