2,089,351 Reasons to Put Down the Keyboard After a 26 Hour Shift [FR status report]

Posted on 09/24/2008 9:38:37 AM PDT by John Robinson

Edited on 09/24/2008 10:19:29 AM PDT by John Robinson. [history]

Well, the good news first. After installing three very sweet machines and new networking equipment, FR is geared up for the onslaught of traffic we anticipate during this election cycle. All that is left is some tuning and bringing online another database server.

The bad news: I goofed horribly this morning and wiped the articles table, a file that stores crucial information for displaying articles.

Fortunately, the data is backed up. I'm working on restoring it, but it may possibly take the rest of the day to bring it back fully.

So don't touch that dial!

UPDATE: Restored a couple million old articles. Still working on the most recent, which need to be restored from incremental backups (very slow!)

Thats a very interesting photo there. If one had worked on a Navy Nuclear sub, one may recognize it....just saying.

One of the guys I worked with just happens to have been a member of the "Silent Service". He's now our IT Director.

I taped that picture to his door today, and he got a nice chuckle out of it for that very reason.

Good to see our “Dollar-a-day” FReepathon being put to good use. Unlike our tax dollars.

Election night - the ultimate acid test. And yes I’ll be relying on FR for election returns, instead of the Moonbat Media

If (G_d forbid!) some kind of disease wiped out the world’s
coffee supply (shudder!) I think this country would be doomed.

If we're going down...so are most of the countries of Europe.

Maybe a decade or so ago, National Geographic had an article
on coffee, along with one of their beautiful maps showing:
1: Where coffee is grown/harvest: mostly in equatorial/tropical regions.
AND
2. Where it's consumed: predominantly in the USA, Canada,
and Northern Europe.

I'm sorry to admit that I just don't remember if a few civilized outposts
like Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa were included in the
"Coffee-Consumption-Sphere".

Good luck and thanks for all the hard work.

Once, in my little pc based world, I hit the wrong button and deleted all the data.

After I regained consienceness and had a total kick my feet on the ground tantrum...

This has got to be far more intricate.

Just don’t do any of Darksheare’s Coffee. Your head will explode.

I have heard that...

I have that recipe, I am actually afraid to try it.

No I am not joking. I really am afraid to try it.

Go ahead, try his recipe. (I have - he made it special for me...) But I have a couple of observations. First, he puts salt in the basket. Forget the salt... (You'd think he was in the Navy making coffee with sea water, but I know he's one of those Army types... )

And he uses way too little coffee in the basket.. The correct method is to take the basket and put in the filter. Forget measuring, it's a waste of time. Just fill the filter to the top with coffee (I recommend one that says "Dark Roast" as opposed to one of those wimpy types called master blend or custom select or some other such wimpy name..)

On top of that he uses way too much water... Fill the carafe with water to the 6 cup mark and pour the water into the machine... (Do place the carafe under the brewing basket before following the next step..) Turn the brewing device 'on' and wait for the bubbling, burping, spitting, and steaming to finish. You will have approximately two travel mugs of caffinated beverage unlike anything you will find in any restaurant, or even Starbukz.. Drink one now, pour the remainder into your thermooz to assist you on your daily drive amidst the liberal throngs driving their Priuses on Interstate 80 (or whatever is nearby...;-)

You should know that I taught Darksheare how to make coffee, he just can't take my version so he came up with his own...

Its ok, we understand.

I’ve personally wiped an entire hard-drive containing irreplaceable data.

Take care and keep up the good work!

Has the backups of all the more recent threads that were around up until mid-morning and midday been found? Thank you for all that you do.

Thank-you for the update. Please do restore all the threads, including the most recent that were up at the time they got lost, including one called “Death Of A Cat” about this poster’s befriending of a cat named Floyd and who had sadly had passed because of illness, which was a blessing and a help the same day I had to put down a beloved cat named Pumpkin, a handsome male orange cat who looked like Morris the cat after a short illness at the age of 10. =^..^=

Thank-you John for your hard work. =^..^=

Thanks for your hard work. It is well appreciated. Could you make the same mistake with some politicians?

It is not easy to do computer server maintenance. From what I had read, John is going to restore the more recent threads that were around and went down. I had posted a previous thread about one such recent thread. John will have to use the backups to bring them back. Also great statement about the politicians at a time when things do not look so great. Looking forward to the upcoming away game between CT and Louieview. :) =^..^=

It’s not THAT bad.

There’s some people who tried it and survived it well enough.
Sam and snippy from the Freeper Foxhole threads gave it the two thumbs up.
Yes, they were on vertical hold scrolling while doing so..

It’s been compared to Kava.
Though without having to sip it through a sugar cube.

But the purpose of using that much water is to recirc.
It condenses down slightly, hence the need for the salt.
Unfortunately, it does do damage to the coffeepot.

John, I own and operate a very large car discussion forum (I won’t use your forum to pimp my URL), and I have had similar issues. I feel your pain, sir, I really do.
