2,089,351 Reasons to Put Down the Keyboard After a 26 Hour Shift [FR status report]

Posted on 09/24/2008 9:38:37 AM PDT by John Robinson

Edited on 09/24/2008 10:19:29 AM PDT by John Robinson. [history]

Well, the good news first. After installing three very sweet machines and new networking equipment, FR is geared up for the onslaught of traffic we anticipate during this election cycle. All that is left is some tuning and bringing online another database server.

The bad news: I goofed horribly this morning and wiped the articles table, a file that stores crucial information for displaying articles.

Fortunately, the data is backed up. I'm working on restoring it, but it may possibly take the rest of the day to bring it back fully.

So don't touch that dial!

UPDATE: Restored a couple million old articles. Still working on the most recent, which need to be restored from incremental backups (very slow!)

Fortunately, the data is backed up.

That's more than good luck - - that's professional diligence.
Thanks for the great work you do with this site.

FRegards,

This AM before I went to work I transferred to articles to my “saved” page. Would read later. Went to saved and tried to pull-up and was told “no thread”. Is that part of the current problem? The 2 articles were “National Road to Bankruptcy” and “Video - The Democrats and Obama Caused the Failure”.

I know what crashed the system.

It was either the 10th posting of a 5th grader in trouble for the anti-Obama T-shirt.

Or it was the 20th posting of the ‘Biden is dropping out to be replaced by Hillary’ rumor.

Take your pick.

Also temporarily cleared the pings to prevent an error message due to missing records.

It’s all the Biden gaffe threads isn’t it? It must take hours to download all the many, many threads on just what stupid inane comment Biden just made.

“Hillary would make a better VP”
“Stand up Chuck!”
“Obama’s Ad was terrible!”

Once I was at corporate HQ logged on to a store’s LAN server. The local power company was going to replace a leaking transformer, so we had to shut down the store’s system.

Well, the power company jumped the gun, and while I wasn’t looking, my screen popped back to the corporate WAN server. Since the screens were virtually identical, I didn’t realize what had happened, and proceeded to shut the corporate server dwon in the middle of the afternoon.

Over a thousand busy stores and hundreds of corporate users had to wait almost an hour for the server to be IPL’ed.

On the upside, my DOH! moment led to development of a routine to prevent that from happening again. I called it “gamma testing”...

Well, if nothing else, the site is blazing fast!

Oh well, I’m all too familiar with that scenario. Lotsa luck. Maybe you’ll get some much deserved rest when you’re done. (In Sept 08?!?... maybe not).

Need more coffee.

May I recommend Darksheare Coffee?

“WARNING - Not to be taken internally!” - Slings and Arrows

In 12 cup drip percolator pot, fill to 6 cup mark with water.
In filter, put 6 heaping scoops of coffee.
Medium roast works best, just make sure it’s a robust blend.
Found a maxwellhouse ‘medium roast’ that was rather anemic.
Put pinch of salt in filter, about as much as it would take to cover the surface of a dime with one even layer.
This keeps the coffee from tasting burned too quickly, it doesn’t age well brewed this way.

Brew, recirculate if need be, usually not.
Add sugar and dairy creamer.
Creamora and coffeemate are not recommended unless you like the heart racing that Ranger Pudding gives.
That, and the nondairy creamer will give you both a headache and a buzz with the coffee.

I usually put about 8 spoons of sugar in this stuff, it ends up being like Russian Kava, thick and sweet with that bitter overtone to it.

Oh, and I am NOT responsible for seeming demonic possession of the coffeepot, or the coffeepot ending up acting as if it has been damaged.

Be sure NOT to add creamora or coffeemate to the brew, unless you LIKE ranger pudding style heart racing.
When I brew that stuff for myself, I recirculate the stuff to brew a second time, but that’s me for my own personal enjoyment, and it may wreck the coffeepot.
Don’t forget the salt, it’s important to the finished brew.
