Economic Fears Give Obama Clear Lead Over McCain in Poll

Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll. Just 9 percent of those surveyed rated the economy as good or excellent, the first time that number has been in single digits since the days just before the 1992 election.

Just 14 percent said the country is heading in the right direction, equaling the record low on that question in polls dating back to 1973. More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face.

He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent.

MSM just pumping “the One” up before the debates so the fall won’t look so bad.

Obviously the Post is enjoying this, but I think it is up to McCain to rightfully tie Fannie Mae to Obama and his inaction during the debates. McCain has the audience and the opportunity to make Obama take the responsibility to these bad decisions and his type of ‘raise taxes on the rich’ forcing employers to take it out on employees. The media has been forcing Obama on the public and McCain’s opportunity will come in the debates when he can expose Obama.

Are these the same experts who said this election would be a referendum on Iraq. Funny how that subject dropped off the radar when we started winning.

In five words, you told it like it is.

It’s no wonder many conservatives refer to the “Washington Post” as the “compost.”

Some details:

This Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted by telephone September 19-22, 2008, among a random national sample of 1,082 adults, 916 registered voters and 780 likely voters. The survey includes additional interviews with randomly selected African Americans, for a total of 163 black respondents. The added interviews (commonly referred to as an "oversample") were completed to ensure there were enough African American respondents for separate analysis; the group was not over-represented in the reported results from the full sample. The results from the full survey have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points. Error margins are higher for subgroups. Sampling, data collection and tabulation by TNS of Horsham, Pa.

Sounds like they did enough polling until they got the result they liked. Kinda like recounting when the dems do it.

You are dead right. All bets are off until the debates.

My husband and I had this discussion last night. He said to me that if the economy tanks, Obama gets this election. I vehemently disagreed, and he said, “Look, most of the American public is not the political junkie you are. Ask fifty people at random who is at fault for the financial crisis, and they’re going to blame Bush.”

I hope and pray that my fellow citizens are at least smarter than that, but I don’t know.

Yesterday’s economic ‘fix’ creates today’s problems.

Today’s ‘fix’, will create tomorrow’s problems.

I can believe the poll. Many have no memory and no foresight.

Likewise, I don't see how a voter could be "undecided" when the choices are a center-right and a Marxist/socialist with latent racist rage.

I say we start sending feathers to the congress. Tell the dems that we will bring the TAR!...and for the republicans who don’t say anything it will be a reminder that they are chickens. oh and send rooster (cock) feathers to barney frank, that would be appropriate.
