Barack Obama and John McCain began intensive rehearsals yesterday for the first presidential debate on Friday, which both men hope will break the stubborn weeks-long deadlock in the opinion polls.
Obama has abandoned all but a handful of campaign events to devote almost four days to training for the clash, setting up a debates camp in Tampa, Florida. His performances on a mock-up of the debate stage are being videoed and scrutinised for his answers and facial expressions. McCain is fitting rehearsals in between an almost full campaign programme.
The Obama-McCto ain clash, which is expected to attract the biggest-ever US television audience for a political debate, is to be held at the symbolically resonant University of Mississippi, once a bastion of racism and scene of violent clashes during the civil rights campaign of the 1960s.
Neil Newhouse, a Republican pollster, said: "I do not think any debate has ever been more important ... There is a huge amount at stake in this."

Will the riots begin as early as immediately after the 1st debate or only after the third debate Mccain wins?
If McCain tries to pull the “nice guy” and “my friend” routine - Obama will clean his clock.
Obama must be attacked, not accomodated.
Obama history, associates, church, waffling, lies and lack of accomplishments must be highlighted and condemned.
Since we know that the Media will declare Obama “the winner” if he doesn’t stammer all over himself in the debates (and say he, “held his own...a tie”, if he does “ya know” his way through), I believe that the real critical debate (and the one that will definitely be the most watched) will be Palin-Biden. IMHO, the Media won’t be able to “spin a win” for Biden if Sarah does well, because they’ll risk alienating the women voters who will be able to judge for themselves.
How many Code Pink punks will storm the stage, screaming for McCain’s head? Meanwhile, the Obama claque in the audience (like paid mourners at a 19th century funeral), cheers wildly. MSM delighted.

The only debate worth watching would be Obama and McCain, across from each other, no rules, no moderators and let whatever happens, happen.
But that is exactly the kind of debate Obama would never agree to.
I don't think I'll bother watching. I know that the MSM is going to declare Obama the winner. Hell, they've already written the stories -- just leaving a few blank spots to stick in quotes or soundbites.
Remember the debates with Hillary and "the good old boys". Obama can be very nasty...and it's "rabble rousing nasty"...what he learned from Reverend Wrong...Jesse and Al...
The rhetoric itself is "empty".
We still don't know: "Who is this Obama?" despite 2 books, a lot of uhs and no record....
He's simply creating himself as he goes along...his trip overseas and his "citizen of the world" speeches, his Roman Podium,...all creating "false images" of some kind of greatness.
His rhetoric remains empty...and he'll never change...
Senator Obama, please name the 57 states.
