WASHINGTON — Democrats have decided to allow a quarter-century ban on drilling for oil off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to expire next week, conceding defeat in a months-long battle with the White House and Republicans set off by $4 a gallon gasoline prices this summer.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, D-Wis., told reporters Tuesday that a provision continuing the moratorium will be dropped this year from a stopgap spending bill to keep the government running after Congress recesses for the election.
Republicans have made lifting the ban a key campaign issue after gasoline prices spiked this summer and public opinion turned in favor of more drilling. President Bush lifted an executive ban on offshore drilling in July.
"If true, this capitulation by Democrats following months of Republican pressure is a big victory for Americans struggling with record gasoline prices," said House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio.
Democrats had clung to the hope of only a partial repeal of the drilling moratorium, but the White House had promised a veto, Obey said.
The House is expected to act on the spending bill Wednesday. The Senate is likely to go along with the House.

High prices of this winter could have been addressed last spring, Democrats will get away with it this election, most won’t see a big bill increase till after November, and the media template of blaming Republicans will still encapsulate many

It's probably more to the benefit of Red-State/Red-District Congressmen and Senators who can now say that electing/ reelecting them doesn't necessarily mean that San Fran Nan will have her way on just saying no to drilling.
Everybody hates Congress but “is for” their district Representative/Senator. This will give the Dems cover this election cycle.
Good political move by Pelosi but of course in this day and age we don't need “politicians for power”, we need statesmen for liberty.
The democrat bastards have already made it clear that after the election they will re-instate the ban. So, who is going to invest millions of dollars now in that kind of atmosphere?

I know. The biggest pimp in the block is the government itself!
Split oak firewood in my area is $360/cord, up about 20%-25%. 5-6 cords for us in a cold winter. Most wood sellers are not advertising, they are taking only prior customers. Last week, one wood seller we know said he only had green wood available. We are cutting our own and have mostly maple and apple, so far.
Our cap for propane is $2.50/gallon, about the same as last year. We use it mostly for hot water and supplemental house/shop heat. We will be using less this year, as we put a new wood stove in the shop.
We haven’t had frost yet, either and the forecast looks like the latest frost in memory. We are still preparing for a very hard winter.
We haven’t even priced wood. There’s a fireplace but the landlord has no idea when the chimney was cleaned. He’s owned the place 22 years and didn’t know they had to be cleaned so I would say “never” is the answer. Fuel oil heat and 80 year old windows. Yeah it’s going to be a hard winter.
