Obama: McCain wants to 'gamble' away US pensions

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (AFP) — Democrat Barack Obama accused his White House foe John McCain Saturday of wanting to "gamble" away Americans' life savings by privatizing Social Security at a time of crisis on the markets.

Neither of the campaigns had any immediate response to news reports that the US government wants permission from Congress to buy 700 billion dollars in troubled mortgages, according to a draft rescue plan for Wall Street.

But Obama renewed his demand that any government bailout must protect ordinary Americans on "Main Street," as well as the busted financiers of New York, through another round of stimulus spending.

This is like the movie Groundhog Day... yet another Democrat candidate accusing the Republican of wanting to take away social security.

To Obama and most Dems, the only “natural” Retirement plan is one provided by the government.

Wow, attacking Republicans for wanting to fix Social Security. Don’t congress-critters get “privatized” pension?

I just wonder why Barry thinks the government is any more creditworthy than Wall Street. It has just taken up several hundred billion dollars worth of IOUs. That's doesn't reassure me about its management of Social Security.

Such intellectual clarity! Such foresight! Such economic vision!

Markets fluctuate and investment involves risk, so we should all rely on a Ponzi scheme for our retirement.

Did that thought come from Obama’s own brain, or was it an artifact of the teleprompter?

I don’t know why but everytime I hear Obama talk I feel as though he’s trying to sell me some “blow” or “crack.” Weird. It’s probably just me.

Wise observation there! The Big Zero will definitely claim that government knows best.

Problem is that Democrats lie about the privatizing of SS - All Pres. Bush wanted to do is allow us to use 10% of what we pay into SS and invest it in government approved stocks and bonds .... Barack's New Book

If you are planning on retiring on Social Security as your income you should at least invest in a corrugated box company so you will have someplace to live.

Here he goes with the fear mongering tactics on Social Security - straight out of the liberal playbook. This guy has nothing new to offer.

When things run by the government fail, what should they do?

Privatize it

Maybe someone should point this out to Barry:

DOW UP 40 POINTS IN PAST MONTH... UP 18% PAST 5 YEARS... UP 44% PAST 10 YEARS... (from Drudge)

John McCain’s position

Reform Social Security: John McCain supports supplementing the current Social Security system with personal accounts—but not as a substitute for addressing benefit promises that cannot be kept. John McCain will reach across the aisle, but if the Democrats do not act, he will. No problem is in more need of honesty than the looming financial challenges of entitlement programs. Americans have the right to know the truth and John McCain will not leave office without fixing the problems that threatens our future prosperity and power.

From Drudge today:

“DOW UP 40 POINTS IN PAST MONTH... UP 18% PAST 5 YEARS... UP 44% PAST 10 YEARS...”

Interesting. When Bush wanted to privatize social security they latched on to the Enron and dot-com collapse and claimed that it would be a gamble. If we had pushed this through, ten years ago, our social security funds would be up 44% DESPITE the dot-com burst, 9/11, a war in Iraq, inflated oil prices, and the current mortgage meltdown.

I’ll take the odds on that gamble any day.

Obama is suppose to be a constitutional expert.

Some heady reporter needs to ask the Messiah --- exactly where in the Constitution does it say the federal government is responsible for the retirement programs of senior citizens?

As we all know, this is just more liberal establishment-class warfare from Obama.
